Help with upgrading units

I'm playing a monarch level game and we've just recently entered the industrial age. I've still got some spearmen hanging around and I want to upgrade them to musktmen. I have access to both saltpeter and iron and I have a treasury of around 4000, yet when trying to upgrade a single spearman in my capital I get a message saying that I can't upgrade! Is this a problem with the 1.21 patch or is there something else that I'm missing entirely?

You need barracks to upgrade.

I'm sure he has barracks too. I'm also having this problem since 1.21 came out. I have a ton of pikemen who refuse to be upgraded to musketmen.

Sorry, don't have the answers for ya though. I think there was a thread about it a bit back which I ignored because I hadn't had that problem at the time.

The picture shows him without a barracks.

Moderator Action: jeffersonebell, do not attach pictures anymore. We are trying to do away with that. If you need further help PM me.

Oops, I didn't wait for the pic to load. My bad. But my problem still remains...:)
You are sure that you have barracks? And what unit are you trying to upgrade?

It is possible that you are tryign to upgrade a unit that is not normally upgradable, like Swordsman, or that if you were using a .bic that you modified you might have made that unit so it was not upgradable.

Palehorse76, I know how to upgrade dammit! What, do you think I'm some kind of... amateur or something?! :p :) . I had built barracks in all my cities before I captured Sun Tzu's Art of War, when I sold them all off, and I'm trying to upgrade pikemen to riflemen, which has always been possible before 1.21. Seriously, all my new units are churning out as vets.

I'm also having the weird phenomenon of my workers not wearing those funky overalls until the modern era, but as I've read that this may be some kind of thing with a clean install of the newest patch, I'm wondering if this is another oddity?

Just an idea, make a barracks and see if you are able to upgrade. I am not exactly sure but maybe Sun Tzu is only to make new units Veterans in the new patch, maybe it doesn't allow for upgrades? Just an idea, you masta playa, you. :p

AoW allows upgrades. I know cos I've upgraded troops in those cities of mine w/o barracks built but with AoW built somewhere else. Yeah, patch 1.21f too. ;)

Second idea then...is where you are trying to upgrade on the same continent? I remember reading something about on the same continent only.

AoW will provide barracks for every city on the continent where it's built (no matter where the city is). Any city on your AoW continent will show a barracks in the city screen.

If you're upgrading units in a city off your AoW continent, make sure you have a barracks built, AND also that it's connected to your trade network i.e. to your pre-req resource. ;)

Other than that, I'm at a loss too at the problem.

My civ only spans one continent, so that's not the problem either. I had all my resoursed connected, all that. I'm just gonna start a new game, see if the problem is still there. Maybe it's just a fluke?

Thanks for the ideas, though. But honestly, I've never had this problem before.

Hi, my first post :). I also had a similar problem. I couldn't upgrade my knights to cavalry, although i had just done it in a different city ... so i made sure the city i was trying to upgrade them in had access to the right recources, had barracks, etc. It did, but I couldn't upgrade. So, I transferred all these knights to the town I upgraded the knights to cavalry earlier. Still, I got the message saying there were no knights which could be upgraded to cavalry. I give up, ahhhh!!!

None of that every happened to me.

Be sure you have enough money, and be sure you go to Editor and check that Firaxis didn't so something dumb such as make knights only upgradeable to cossacks or such. It has happened.
I always use my own edited mod anyway.

If all else fails send this as a bug to Firaxis: http://www.firaxis.com/contact_gamefeedback.cfm

Interssting, interrrressstttingg. . . .

Pikemen to riflemen, eh? Do you have a supply of saltpeter?

I ask because I recently encountered an upgrade difficulty I had not seen before. I happened to fall way behind the various AI civs and found myself with neither saltpeter nor the military strength to go take some saltpeter. No problem, I thought, I'll play very, very nice until Nationalism, and upgrade to riflemen then (skipping over musketmen, which require saltpeter; riflemen do not). Built a bunch of pikemen in the meantime, both as a deterrant and as an "upgrade force" for when I hit Nationalism. Discovered Nationalism; went to upgrade; could not upgrade one single pikeman! until, of course, I sold my first-born for a supply of saltpeter -- then I could upgrade straight to riflemen. Tells me that the upgrade algorithm clearly looks at steps: i.e., spearman to infantry is actually spearman to pikeman, pikeman to musketman, musketman to rifleman, rifleman to infantry; which means you effectively need iron, saltpeter, and rubber to upgrade that lowly spearman!
