It all depends on which unit and what you're using it for. If it's a replacement then you need to make sure the game (Custom Assets hopefully) references the new artwork. If it's a brand new addition then you'll need to do some XML work as well.
good point, though I think he did mean that nothing happened, as oppose to "I read the guide, downloaded the unit then did nothing (ok ok, I had a cup of coffee) and after nothing happened for a while came here asking for help."
@bolesting: Make sure you unzipped the files to the correct folders. If you put the units into a mod make sure you're loading the mod and not vanilla civ. Also, how are oyu checking if the unit made it into the game? Because it's possible to create them in such a way that they won't be produced (I think) so use the world builder to just go through the list of units.
