You should try to be more specific with your questions. The questions you've asked are ones that have multiple answers, as JBXxX8 mentioned. Also, IMHO, I don't really think you should need help to answer those kinds of questions; those choices should be left up to the player him/herself.

If you've played Civ 2, I suggest you choose the Americans, and play a couple games on a small world using your Civ 2 tactics, to gain familiarity with the system.
If you haven't played Civ 2, then take a look at the sticky topics at the top of this page, for tips and suggestions.

Unless you don't like to, I would suggest looking through the manual that came with the game. It's got a lot of information, most of it useful, including a section for those who may have already played Civ 2. You can use the manual to look up information concerning the questions you asked. I'm sure you'll be able to help yourself. If not, feel free to ask, and welcome to CivFanatics!

For starting out and learning the mechanics of the game, start with a civ that has traits that tend to be helpful in most of the phases/ages of the game. In no particular order: Industrious, Scientific, Religious, Commercial. (Egypt, Babylon, Persia make good civs for learning the game...)

These traits are not "better" than the others, they just lend themselves well to a general style of play. The other traits are also strong, but at this point you need to learn the mechanics of the game before learning how to play to the strengths of some of the other traits.

Once you win a game at Chieftain, move up to Warlord - immediately.

And when you've started a game or two, and come back here in a day or three with a ton of questions, check out this thread.

Good luck, and welcome to Civfanatics! :D

There are far too many things to explain if you have never played any incarnation of civ before. If I were you, I would just start a game or three at chieftain, and start playing. You will undoubtedly pick up many of the gameplay basics doing this. When you have more specific questions such as Golden Ages, Unique Units, and diplomacy tactics, you should come back and ask those questions. More accurately, you should come back and look for those answers, and then ask the question if you can't find them.

I'm sure each of us could write a 10,000 word post explaining many details of the game to you, but you would be hard pressed to remember 10% of those.

You will have to experiment for yourself, depending on your style of play
certain civs may be better suited for you than others :scan: . I think
you should read-up in the forums and War Academy, then just go at it a
few times on Chieftan just to get the feel of the game ;) . Soon you will
be a :king: .

Go random, let the computer choose your set up. It's important not to get caught up in the minutiae of the game right off the bat. Pay close attention as the game and your civ unfolds constantly cross checking anything that you either don't understand or want to learn more about with the civlopedia and the manual. Don't set your expectations to high, you may play a few games partially and find yourself restarting as your knowledge grows. Enjoy ;)
