How are you supposed to advance very far into modern ages without having the game end? My last game i ended at getting flight

Research Speed
The AI researches faster at higher difficulties, and you can get dragged along by them. So the harder the difficulty the sooner you get to a given tech - if you survive that long, of course

You can speed up your own research rate by meeting lots of AI civs (the more you know who know a tech, the cheaper that tech is to discover), by buying techs from the AI and by simply increasing the amount of commerce you generate - 50% of a lot is much better than 100% of not very much. Lots of roads. Build libraries and universities in the cities where it's cost-effective.

Long Range Attack
I assume you mean catapults, cannons or artillery? If you are 'active' and in range (the range is the number in brackets, e.g. catapults are (1) and artillery is (2)) then either click 'B' or the bombard button 9usually middile of the second-from-bottom row, IIRC) and a targeting icon will appear. Place that on a target within range (it will disappear against banned targets) and left click, and you fire.

If you meant air units, its a similar process. Except the button has a little 'bomb' icon instead.

Welcome to CFC Blahblah.....It is difficult to reach some of the last Modern Age techs (ie Stealth) because by the time you research all the techs, you or someone else will have launched a spaceship.

Also, how did the game end? Was it by histograph (year 2050), or did an AI civ win by domination, spacerace, diplomatic or culture?

You can always disable the types of victory allowed, maybe this is what you are looking for...

There's one more factor in research speed that never gets brought up in discussions like this and that's the size of the map. Especially on chieftain/warlord, where the AI is utterly helpless with regards to research, the increased tech costs on huge maps can make it tough for the human player to progress very far up the tech tree.

So if you're playing on large/huge maps, you could try a smaller map size instead of moving up a level and possibly get the same results.
