Here are the Years/Turns figures

If you’ve wondered how the years/turns equation works here are the figures. They can be handy to know if you’re trying to work out how many turns you have left in a quest for a culture victory, how many turns you need before a particular Temple (or whatever) gets its 1000 year bonus, or just to see how many turns you have left to achieve your objectives.

These figures may be readily available somewhere, but I couldn’t find them, so did it the hard way – by turning off all other civs, parking my worker, and hitting Enter repeatedly until I got to 1950. A side effect of doing no management was that it built only 1 warrior and 2 spearmen before it shut down all production.

And despite it being my capital (palace site) and only city, I reached 1950 with a totally wasteful 12 population city (all shields red), thanks to my relentless neglect!

PERIOD…………..YRS per TURN………TURNS

3950 – 2750 BC………… 50……………….25
2710 – 1750 BC………….40……………….25
1725 – 750 BC……………25………………40
730BC –250 AD………….20………………50
260 - 1250 AD…………..10………………100
1255 – 1750 AD………….5……………….100
1752 – 1950 AD………….2……………….100
1951 – 2050 AD………….1………………..100

TOTAL BEFORE SCORING STOPS 540

You can play on after 2050, just for your own interest, but the scoring shuts off.

Sorry about all the damned dots, but I couldn't figure out how to get a table to display properly (apologies if it still didn't work in when I post it) and I'm running out of time.

Hope this is useful to somebody.

:) :)

Howl!

I just KNEW somebody would post something like that!!

I expected it would be along the the lines of "Well, if you'd bothered to check page 1 in your manual" or "At the top of the site's home page you'll find a link to...."

AND you wrote it out more neatly than I did

Is your original post a "sticky" somewhere Ferd? And if it isn't already, shouldn't it be linked to from a reference area or something? (Now you can all jump in and say "But it IS, just look in the......")

Ah, I love forums, so many opportunities to learn, and so many opportunities to make an ass of myself and keep my perspective in balance!

:D :D :D

Well, I don't feel so bad now. :D

I just followed Ferd's post a bit more carefully, and it turned out to be on page 2 at the end of a thread about a Culture Rush strategy. The thread had its last post over a week ago, and is now several pages back (Good thread too). So with the Strats & Tips section now having close to 4,000 posts and the overall forum weighing in at over 40,000 it would seem likely that at least a few people wouldn't have seen it.

Anybody know if there is a spot anywhere where all this sort of useful "facts and rules" stuff (rather than strats & opinions) is being pooled for everyone to find easily??

You'll notice my comment to Ferd was that it should end up in someone's FAQ.

It should either be in the Civ3 Info Center, or in one of the Strategy Articles that's already written.

I will add them to the Info Center. :)

Do these years/turns figures vary with difficulty levels, like in Civ2?

I doubt it. When pulling out the numbers, I used several savegames from several different difficulties and map sizes, and they all seemed to match up. I cross checked the ones that were in the same time eras, and there weren't any discrepancies.

CORRECTION

Sorry for the error but when I said that I ended up with a totally corrupt city, I should have said "totally wasteful". I think I must have got cross eyed from all that hitting the Enter keys and squinting at the numbers!

The interesting result of all that work was that it enabled me to check how I was going in a game that I thought I'd blown. I'd only put down a core of 15 cities before getting involved in a few fights, and some other distractions. By the mid point of the game (turn-wise) I was just checking to see how much I was going to miss a 100,000 point culture victory by and was amazed to discover that if I could survive till close to the end I would actually win!

So I got back on the job and won a "Culture Crawl" victory by 1973. I finished the game with 24 cities - from memory it was roughly 16 settled, 2 taken by attack and 6 by cultural defection.
Interestingly, my best city would theoretically also have reached the magic 20,000 by 2037.

I'll post some more details in a few days when I get my phone line back. Due to storm damage I'm off the net for a while (posting from a friend's today).:)
