Hero units

I hate to ask but can anyone think of a way I can properly integrate upgradeable yet non-buildable hero units. I have a seriously bad feeling it might be hard coded. I've looked through quite a few scenarios looking for them, and the only thing remotely close is the mothballed battleships in TCW.

My current set up is to have them as king units with regicide off. This is fine for a bit but when I need to upgrade them I can't. Any help would be greatly appreciated; and before you ask I have got the upgrade paths sorted and resource and tech requirements are set up.

It works for me the way you described. Are you sure you have a city with Barracks, the correct resources, or enough gold?

Are you sure you selected the "Upgrade" flag along with all the special actions (Load, Pillage, Capture, etc.)
 
Wow, thanks for the quick reply. But yea I've tried what you said Virote but I've played thorugh the scenario several times and I've had a problem each time. And I've tried changing things round in Civ3Edit; I've probably been making a couple of stupid mistakes so I'll check round again :blush:.

And William looking at your post somehow reminded me of the sengoku scenario, I believe the shoguns were upgradeable but non-buildable. I'll research this. Thanks for the help guys I hope I can sort it.
 
Right, after looking at sengoku I changed the stats and turned off disband and it worked perfectly... probably a mistake on my part sorry guys, thanks for the help anyway.

Thanks for asking this question. You helped my brainstorming about how to do an upgrade (but not buildable) path I'm considering for the Bharata mod.
 
In EZI2 we use the Great Leader that is spawned in battle to upgrade to a Hero unit (we call them Champions). Each civ has a different hero unit. The advantage of this is you can edit the military leaders list (against each civilization) so that your heroes get individual names. These hero units could even be upgraded at further points with different techs but we don't take it that far in EFZI2. One other thing, the AI handles it all quite well as you can see in the attached image.

Thanks, KingArthur! That would fit well with what I have in mind - Rishis. In the Indian epics they were very powerful, almost immortal, and rarely seen because they spent a lot of time (centuries) meditating. Their mystic powers were a biproduct of that meditation. In game terms I want to give them abilities that increase & add new ones in each era (one upgrade tech each era); they could be used as powerful combat units, expended to build wonders etc., but the only way to get a really powerful one would be to hold them back for upgrade.
