Heroes of Might and Magic 5: Any Good?

Probably shallower than the original one. I've played 2 and 3 would recommend that you get either of them.

No point in getting the original HOMM5. Either get HOMM5: Tribes of the East, which is a stand-alone expansion pack, or HOMM5 Gold Edition which includes the game and both expansion packs

Back when HOMM5 was released it had tons of bugs and lacked basic features like a map editor or random map generator. Tribes of the East with the latest 3.1 patch is actually a great game, about as good as HOMM3. There are still some balance issues (Arcane Archers...) but whatever

There's some new stuff, but overall, yeah, it's much like the rest of the series. Same ideas and such.

Much more like 1,2,3 than 4. I think it's worth it.

Gelion-

What do you mean "shallower"? I've played all except II, and certainly all have their plusses and minuses...

I played IV after II and III I think. I was not impressed by graphics (too mythical and too great), how characters reacted, storyline etc. Maybe I just got older :) I was not impressed by Lord of the Rings the Movie either.

You should get that thing that has all 3 games (5 + HoF + ToE) that i keep seeing around here.

Well if you've only played the first Heroes game than it would certainly live up to it. But why did you play ONLY the first one ?

I've played all except no1 . And it goes like this:
III > V >>>>>> II >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> IV

I think I'll go with GVBN'S suggestion and get HOMM5 Gold Edition.
Heretic Cata-
I bought Heroes of Might and Magic 1 off ebay. It was a group of games, and I just really wanted the others that came with it. It's a fun game, but I wasn't really interesed in it that much. Now, I'm looking for something different from the other strategy games I've been playing (Age of Empires 3, Civ 4, and EU3) The reason I'm looking into the fifth one and not the earlier ones is because I want something 3D.

I found II with origional packaging and stuff in the box (a little worn though but the disk is hardly scratched).

It was okay, but I found it rather frustrating and didn't get past the 1st level.

I used to play 3 w/ Armageddon's Blade for hours, year after year. Two was pretty good, four was pretty terrible. I only played five for a bit after it was released, no expansions. I rated it around with four. My major problem was with the storyline, but then it jumped around quite a bit from game to game.

What i really loved about the 3rd was the obscene amount of units. Only the 5th came close to that. While the alternative upgrades are a nice tactical thing it would be nicer to have another upgrade level instead of another upgrade path. (or both :D)

This. The fact that each faction has distinct skills and perks attached to it, and really only works with heroes of that faction, adds a lot to overall feel and replayability of that game. I still absolutely abhor the graphics, though. Why oh why does each unit need obscene amounts of clutter with unimaginable purpose and dumb design hanging around them??

Because it has to be in line with all the other games - meaning they have to be anime too.

The choice of units was what made IV unique and cool (although there were definitely things that made it unique and worse, like not getting all your units at the start of the week). I do like the upgrades in III and V, but the choice in IV was a nice way to make it its own game while still maintaining the same feel as the rest of the series.

By IV, it was definitely time for some changes to the series, and V was a good adjustment for things in the "oops, shoulda left this as it was" category.
