Last night I saw the Lion King and as most Disney movies, they are all right for youths and adults too. There was something odd that struck me though while watching it, and I wasn't the only one. When Scar( the evil lion) had just told all the hyenas about his plan to overthrow Mofasa, and take care of Simba and become the new king, they sang a song, and it ended with Scar standing on the top of a mountain looking down on the hyenas. This wasn't very odd except that it was night, and they had placed a moon behind him, the same type of moon used in arab countries:eek: Of course this could be a coincidence, but if it is, they should have found out and changed the moon to make sure that Scar w. Hyenas weren't connected to Arabs at all, if it wasn't their intention.
I haven't really thought this through, so am I overreacting or does Disney really want to connect Evil with Arabs? Anyone found more symbolism in the movie supporting this theory or not?

Sounds farce to me...
You are talking about a crescent? That's a symbol of many things other than Islam (not Arabs).

And it came a lot of time before the fuss with Imam Terror reached the US.

So I think it is you overreacting.

Was it just a crescent moon? Or did it have the star between the cusps?

Either way, no, I don't think it would have been intentional. I haven't really seen the Lion King (just stray parts of it, like when my nephews were watching the videotape for the nth time), but I just know that these things usually aren't intentional (well I don't KNOW for sure of course, but if I see no compelling substantiating evidence, I have to assume "no" to really be fair). And are usually not even noticed, at any rate. You're the first one whom I've heard this from.

Please let's not go on another ridiculous PC crusade.... I HOPE that's not what you intended here.

Do people like you ever watch movies just to enjoy them, or do you freeze-frame constantly to find a tiny detail to turn into a larger-than-life conspiracy?

Mein Gott! I always knew that Jonathan Taylor Thomas was concealing an insidious neo-imperialist agenda behind that hopelessly cute exterior!

;)

Besides, the moon usually IS depicted as a crescent in art or cartoons--unless it is depicted as a full moon, which is also a common depiction. So, is EVERY abstract representation of the moon that is crescent-shaped, related to Islam?

I'll let you answer that one, funxus.

come, on - that song and how the hyenas march is more like putting him up as an evil dictator alla Hitler or stalin.

Is it a new fashion in Sweden or something? Blame DISNEY?

vonork is Swedish, and he was amazed at this thread too.

You know, this was pointed out to me once: on a pack of Camels (a cigarette brand here in the US and I think some places overseas), on the hair of the camel pictured on the pack, a pattern of dots seems to form a figure of a man with a big hard-on. A woman semi-spread eagled a little distance away is less clear (actually its like a scribble, can't see no t and a :( ;) ), but supposedly there too.

Anyway--was this an intentional "subliminal" effect Philip Morris (or whatever tobacco conglomerate makes Camels) put on the packs, to suggest their smokes somehow promote one's virility, or was this just a pattern of dots?

I guess I was overreacting:) Note that I didn't say that it was so, I asked if anyone had ever thought of the connection.

No, of course not. If the moon would have been on either side of him though, I'd probably wouldn't have noticed, but the moon was behind him (maybe this is a bad example: but it reminded me of e.g. the way they put Lenin in front of a Soviet flag). I can't remember if the star was there.

Nope, not my intention.

No, I never freeze-frame, not even this scene, and I enjoyed the movie very much (IMO it's one of the better Disney-movies). I wasn't looking for tiny details turning into a larger-than-life-conspiracy, and I usually don't.:) I allways watch movies to enjoy them, but there are a lot of movies that are made to be "analyzed" or discussed afterwards (the Lion King is not one of them though).

Angling movies to be pro someting is common, especially in hollywood. Pearl Harbor is one example. I've never thought of angled Disney movies before, which would be unlikely.

While bringing in cigarettes and sublimal effects into this discussion, I've heard that Marlboro cigarette packages has over 40 ways indicating racism. e.g. when you open the package, the paper inside looks like a KKK hood, and there are small hoods hidden all over the package. Apparently the KKK was the ones designing the packages, but I don't know how true this is.

Don't 'they' say that Marlboro upside somehow = OroblJew?

The Red Triangles on Marlboro from a "KKK".

EDIT: Found the myths...

Cigarette packaging oddity

There are several myths associating Marlboro to the Ku Klux Klan. Supposedly there is written KKK somewhere inside the packaging, but this is yet to be confirmed.

Other rumours says the three K's actually are hidden in the wide open. The inverted triangle that is characteristic of the Marlboro packaging is representing the letter K, and it is repeated three times on the pack, thus being a reference to the group in question.

In addition, if one turns the pack upside down, the Marlboro logo itself says something resembling orobl Jew. According the the myth, "Orobl" is a phonetic transcription of horrible, thus forming a statement to go with the reference to the Ku Klux Klan.

Great Idea! Earth should do a swap with Jupiter.
We could choose: Io, Ganymede, Callisto or Europa?
Oh but Saturn and Neptune each have a large moon.

Those moons are never a crescent viewed from Earth.

By the way do you have a really powerful motor
and a long enough tow rope, in Sweden?

I agree that this is overreacting, but there have been other rumors about Disney inserting subliminable ;) messages in their animation. These rumors have more to do with perverted images than racist images. In one part of the Lion King, Simba flops down in the dust, which forms a cloud that seems to spell out the letters SEX. At the end of the Little Mermaid, the priest who is officiating the wedding appears to have an erection. I haven't verified these personally, but who knows?

I've seen the priest thing from the Little Mermaid. My friends sister pointed it out to me actually....

I thought that scene was refering more to WWII Germany...

I mean, What else is going to be in the African plains? The moon and stars. Those can be seen all over the world. No conspiracy there.

Thats what I thought too, how the hyenas march past Scar as they goose step and stare at him....

People have also claimed that the hyenas were stereotypes of African-Americans, but I think only Shenzi could be considered that, and Whoopie Goldberg didn't complain. :p

If Lion King were prejudiced against the Arabs they wouldn't have named the father Mufassa and the kid, Simba, with a Swahili name (most of the names besides scar are Swahili, and the Swahili language is a cross between mostly Arabic and a Bantu African language).
