I can see why people would think that some of these games are a bit iffy... The ones where there is heaps of food missing out of a few cities and makes them look like they have been jacked up at the last minute is suss but then I don't utilize the frieight/growth manouvre... So It may be something to do with that...
Today, I have been reading a lot of trashing of Shadowdale's Deity HOF game (Morgan is not necessarily trashing it, but I'll get started with his comment).
Shadowdale never said he didn't use the FCT (Food Caravan Trick)... in fact, any semi-competant player can see that his whole goal of the game is to use the FCT to create a high-scoring game... The very nature of the FCT is to "kite" food -- that is, give lots to one city, while only being charged one food icon in the donating city. That is called the FCT. Food caravans are how cities are pumped up beyond their "natural" size
without cheating.
Remember, the FCT is not "cheating" (since the HOF does not prohibit using the FCT), and his game should not be criticized on that basis, or even on the basis of the food deficits that result from the FCT. Further, most (if not all) the other HOF entries do not use the FCT. But let me say again, the FCT is not a "cheat".
About Shadowdale's cities being "jacked up" at the last minute... if he wanted to "jack them up", he could have made them size 80 or 90 or 120, LOL...
I've even seen it suggested that Shadowdale (and the other HOF entries) used "2X" production to play the game. Obviously, those folks didn't bother to take a look at the games. In fact, I don't think it's even possible for a SP game to be done at 2X (at least with Civ II MGE 5.4.0f).
As for myself, I prefer to play without either super-size cities or the FCT. And yes, I do run food deficits in some of cities (due to engineers and "food sharing" of terrain). But remember... the reason cities have a food reserve is to tide them thru times of "famine". And a food deficit is certainly not a basis to view a game as "iffy"!!
So here is the bottom line... even Shadowdale's score is not the theoretical maximum (which is almost 40,000 points). Others may feel free to go out and exceed Shadowdale's score, if they have the time and inclination...
