Higher Difficulty levels... Wow

I always play on Regent, everything is fair there. You arent penalized, and neither is the computer, I like it that way. I like an even playing field.

With one exception: you are much smarter than the AI can ever be... Regent is easy for people that play CIVIII a lot and pick up the tips from the war academy

What techs do the AI avoid? I usually get the printing press first...

My observation is that the AI will usually research those items at the top of the chart before those at the bottom. This is a generalization and I don’t want to get into a flame match with anyone.

In Ancient Times if you want to research something the AI will probably avoid, I would go for those techs on the way to Monarchy. The AI seems to head directly for Republic.

In the Middle Ages I don’t find that the AI is as predictable as in the other ages. However, it does seem that it heads for Navigation first. I usually head for Military Tradition (Cavalry).

In the Industrial Age the AI generally goes for Nationalism first. This is one area where you can always trump the AI. Go for Sanitation. After that it becomes a race for Replaceable Parts (Infantry) and Motorized Transport (Tank)

In Modern Times, if you aren't ahead by then, you are probably going to lose. The AI seems to go for Computers (Mech Infantry). You should go for Synthetic Fibers (Modern Armor). If you can't win when you get Modern Armor first, you should go back to playing Monopoly!

I've been playing at Regent most of the time and just moved up to Monarch, where I've won all the games I've played, mostly Conquest/Domination. The AI gets all kinds of bonuses, but if you know what you're doing, wage constant war against the AI, and micromanage, you should have a lead in no time.
