Highest Score

The score is first multiplied by
(difficulty + 1)
and then divided by 50.

After the multiplication by (difficulty + 1), the result cannot be more than 32,767 (since it's signed). Then it's divided by 50, for a maximum rating of 655%.

So if you aim at the maximum rating on emperor level, then try to get
0x1999 = 6,553 points :)

The math looks good, but there is something else going on here. The overflow point for Emperor implies a multiplication by 6 somewhere in the rating calculation.

The last positive rating is 546% from a score of 5461 (0x1555). 5462 * 6 puts you in overflow territory at 32772.

Then Valen is correct: overflow is feasible within normal scoring. I'm a little disappointed; I thought Civ's math would be a little better. Oh well, negative scores are the new goal! Thanks for the info!

EDIT: Gowron, do you have information on how the game calculates Approval Rating, Family Size, and Productivity? These variables are especially susceptible to overflow. In large games Family Size can bounce back and forth between positive and negative between turns, but the other two turn negative (simultaneously) then gradually creep back to zero or barely positive before heading deeply back to negative.

I'm sorry I have no information about this, nor did I have any information about the rating calculation. I just ran some tests and derived the algorithm; it didn't take much time since I have some experience in doing this.

If I find enough time, I can have a look at these other formulas as well. Just can't promise it.

That's odd, I was able to get up to 655% by hex editing the hall of fame.

Which version of Civ do you use? Maybe your version multiplies by 6 instead of 5.

What rating/score ratio do you get at emperor level? (0.1 for me)
And what rating/score ratio do you get at chieftain level? (0.02 for me)

I have version 475.04.
Ratings are as advertized in the manual:
Score * 0.1 for Emperor
Score * 0.08 for King
Score * 0.06 for Prince
Score * 0.04 for Warlord
Score * 0.02 for Chieftan

All I can say is that in general, Civilization has delivered surprises at every turn. That must be why we still love it.

Hmm, could really be the version, I have 475.01...

Maybe you could try this:
Open "fame.dta" with a hex editor (make a backup copy) and change the first 3 bytes to
99 19 04,
save it, open civ and view the HoF.
That would give you a rating of 655% in 475.01; if you get something else, then they changed the score calculation code.

11 986 points. How is that possible? :)

When i play on earth and have an enormous big empire, my score is not higher than 3000 and population is 100 million. but 300? that should be extremely long and perhaps boring process to reach or i am wrong or what?

My current game's score should exceed 12,000 but I don't yet know by how much. The game on the list in question contains three level 42 cities and a level 40 city, which understandably inflates population statistics. I am abandoning large cities due to lack of benefit from phantom taxmen.

Most of the scoring is achieved via Future Tech; it's around 1500 in that game.

Whether you enjoy this type of thing is a matter of personality. I derive pleasure from games I've played to death by stretching them as far as they go. If the idea of an eight hour turn scares you then you definitely don't want to get involved.

Wow, Whelkman, you have way too much time :crazyeye:

655%

Btw, I've just derived the formulae that you asked for. I'll post them in a new topic, to make them easier to find with the search function :)

This shows a retirement 4 turns after reaching the magic 5461.
The score registers as 5511.
The rating comes up 551 just like it should.
But on the Hall of Fame, it comes in dead last.
No new entry is made in the Hall of Fame for this game.

The rating that was displayed was OK, but the rating that was compared to the exiting Hall scores had the overflow.

New in the forum but very very old player of CIV1, started again in this period after +20 years! My top highscore is now 267% on Earth, obviously Emperor and occupieng the whole world but 1 tiny Indian City, not to finish the play. Please share your top scores.

Only score sitting in my HoF right now is

Emperor Genghis Khan of Mongols to 220 AD
Pop 17 million, score 78%

It was a tentative exercise to get an early space launch, and see if avoiding aqueducts pays off. At some point I will sit down again with civ and excel to try to optimize the number of cities needed (I suspect I overbuilt).

Never used any cheat on CIV! Simply strong playing and several years of experience! Today I just finished my best game ever:
Zulus, 2019: Emperor Bafab V
240000000 citizens (2999 score),
+420 all Wonders,
+100 Peace,
+315 Future Tech (63 discoveries after known technologies),
+200 Spaceship
= 4034,
gives
403%!!!

Can post image / saved match if anyboby doubts
Hope mine is World Record!
Cheers
Bafab17

Ok in comparison to other mentioned scores this here is not the best, but its a good score in a short game.

I often play the world map scenario as emperor and with 3 tribes in the beginning. I choose the babylonians, the other 2 tribes are the white and the blue color, which are as we know in / near europe. So it is possible to attack and delete these tribes very fast in the early years. As far as i know, new tribes appear if a tribe is deleted very early. Sometimes these new tribes are positioned in my territory - which brought me an early win.
Year 3000 BC
Population 60.000
Score 1600 - 160%

Not bad for a 30 Minutes-game.

Wow! You are quite masters
You are cheating? well, i don't want to cheat.

I don't know, if it is "high score", but one of my best game was when I reached all sciences before AD. Unfortunetly, if i started the spaceship, it never finded alpha centauri, if i started it before 1850AD (or, some year later, before the 1turn=20 years changed to 1turn=2years)

Just started playing again and my highest score is 1672 / 167% atm. I recall getting slightly higher scores, but if I remember correctly never more than ~175.

I think I played it 15 years ago but I still remember my highest score.
I won BC 1040 by eliminating 12 or 14 ( I don’t remember but the max civs possible) CIV's on Emperor Level on Earth. I had 130% and my name was equal to Simon the Solomon. Anybody remember their scores.
:king:
