Hello everyone! :)

It has been a long time since I played Civ4, but I have finally returned to it and wend ahead and borrowed BTS from a friend to find out if its worth buying.

The only problem is that I don't have my normal PC (XP, single core P4, 1 GB RAM, 7300GT 512 MB) with me. So I am forced to borrow my father's notebook and use it. It has Vista, 1 GB RAM, dual core 2Ghz, onboard intel 945GM chipset. The game used to run very smoothly on my desktop at full graphics. However, on this notebook, I am running it at the lowest possible settings and even then its graphics are giving me problems. The biggest problem is scrolling. It's just so slow that it takes all the fun out of playing the game. I am running the game on standard size at epic speed. Even around 600BC I have slow scrolling . BTW, the mouse pointer moves pretty fast. It's just the screen that is slow to scroll. It's unpleasant, it strains my eyes and I cannot make a decision about buying BTS.

If it helps, the performance indexes given by Vista for the notebook are as follows:

Processor: 4.9
RAM: 4.5 (BTW, around 400 MB of RAM is FREE)
Graphics: 3.5
Gaming Graphics: 3.1
Hard Disk: 4.3

Looking at these numbers, my heart sort of sinks. It is probably the onboard graphics card that just can't handle this game's low requirements. Notebooks really suck at gaming - my desktop (before upgrade) with 512 MB Ram and onboard graphics used to run the game much better than this.

Any and all advice will be really appreciated. I am getting Civ4 + BTS for around $25 (will sell my Civ4 copy to someone else :D), but the offer won't last for more than 10 days. I need to decide before then. I have already tried a lot of things with very little success. I am enjoying my old favourite Imperialism 2 for the time being.

I am running BTS 3.17 (official).

Post your dxdiag results for the laptop.

But, I am pretty sure that the integrated graphics on this laptop do not support Hardware Transform and Lighting. This is a minimum requirement to play Civ. It is possible that if you go to the display settings, you might find an option to "enable 3D acceleration" or something similar. (Right click on desktop, select "personalize" then choose "display settings." Click the advanced properties and look around the tabs for something having to do with 3D acceleration)

Don't know how it slipped my mind. Uploaded now.

My display driver does not allow me to change the hardware acceleration settings. What the !@#@ is this - my 915GAV with onboard graphics let me do that. I am NEVER buying a laptop again. EVER. Unless I also have a desktop ;)

BTW, I didn't know T&L (or TNL) stood for Transform and Lighting. I will try to find out if it is supported or not. I doubt it strongly.

Here is what I found on Intel's website:

Intel said:
Microsoft* DirectX* 9 Vertex Shader 3.0 and Transform and Lighting supported in software through highly optimized Processor Specific Geometry Pipeline (PSGP)

I take that to mean they are sort of simulating TnL with software - which probably isn't going to cut it for Civ.

Yes, I also just found out that it supports TnL but only in software mode. Here is what I got from reliable sources:

1. The GMA 950 does not support T&L. It has software T&L in the drivers, but most programs and games specifically REQUIRE hardware T&L.

2. The GMA 950 only has DX9 support. DX10 will run, but will reduce DX10 effects to what is possible in DX9. The X3100 is the first Intel GPU to support DX10.

This can be summarized as - Civ4 (and BTS) will run, but the performance will be bad.

I guess that I will just have to hope that I get back my desktop ASAP. Thanks Steve, I needed a bit of guidance and you provided it :goodjob:

Well, I didn't get my desktop in time and so am still using my friend's copy.

But, on the brighter side, once I did get my desktop, it has been a very smooth and pleasant ride. The game runs in 1440*900 resolution at the highest details. The problems arise only when it is a game like Rhye's mod in the 1700AD+, but that is expected with only a normal P4 and 1 GB RAM. I am enjoying the game thoroughly :)
