    on the placement of the next city. i think this is what the fat cross would look like. i am at work and civ not installed so i think this would be how the grid lines fell.

    C=City
    G=Gold
    S=Stone
    B=Bismark
    X=inside fat cross

    ..______BB
    _XXX__BBB
    GXXXXBBC
    XXCSXBBB
    GXXXX_BB
    _XXX

    that said, would the best city site be the spot to the left of the stone? we would have both gold, the stone, 2 additional hills, a lot of river, and no overlap? i don't mind overlap, but wasn't the capital a great place for a later GP farm and this new city a great site for a production city?

    i agree on all the objectives.

    Oops ... obviously we've missed each other ... oh eloquent Black Knight.

    My roster was only offering alternatives :(. That'd make it:

    i) finish warrior(7) - next warrior(7) - growth - settler(19) = 33 turns
    ii) finish warrior(7) - settler(25) = 32 turns
    iii) switch to settler(25) = 25 turns

    And I'd vote for iii).

    On settlerproduction. When producing settlers or workers ... :food: and :hammers: do count towards the production!
    That is the reason why you can easily sent your citizens to work other tiles as long as you don't starve your city. And I'd like to take tiles with the available max of :food:+:hammers: plus :commerce: if possible.

    It seems like we're having problems in understanding each other a bit. I think I've got you wrong sometimes before. Maybe we should always finish these posts with something like: "And here's what I would do. In headwords!" ;)

    Regards, .

    PS: (<< :lol:) What does the rest of the team think? Are we getting fussy? I'm a lot into strategic discussion ... But what's up with you?

    Already editing before posting the original:
    I perfectly agree that this would be the best spot. What I've been thinking about is: Moving it two tiles south to open space for another city 1 tile north of the northern gold. So we'd grab the pigs and the incense with it. But I'm not really sure whether that's a good idea or not. I'd be fine with settling as you posted.

    i was only thinking we may need a production powerhouse in the event of holy wars. how long before our infastructure can handle starting a third city? would bismark take the opening and plant his own city in the northern spot we planned for a third city? are you a gamblin' man? 'cause it's a risk. it doesn't look like he can expand east. only south or west. that's a 50% chance he steals or third city site (or just screws it up for us).

    now we could later take the city... but that's only if he is not our religion. if he is the same religion, no war. right? so that brings us back to the original question. which site would be best for our long term goals.

    i understood you as 3 options and it was still undecided. i agree with you on option iii being the best choice. the sooner we get the gold and stone the better. either site would provide a production city, and with all the river tiles commerce wouldn't be bad.

    Is the proposed river tile W of the stone desert or flood plains? We don't want to found a city on a flood plains tile do we?

    If its a flood plains tile I would suggest this spot instead although it wouldn't allow us to gain the stone until the borders expanded so we would need to count on getting Judaism and rushing a missionary in there for the early culture. Either that or build Stonehenge without the benefit of stone. If its a desert tile then I say it sounds like a good spot to me too.

    the tile i have proposed is one tile west of the stone resource and one east of the tile you circled.

    That one is a flood plains tile though isn't it? Just trying to think long term is all and if its desert then just ignore me, :crazyeye: . I wasn't clear from the earlier discussions as to what the terrain type was there. I'd just hate to see us lose the extra food from a flood plains tile since we will need the food to work the mines and quarry as well as possbily get a few prophets. The plains tile I circled is marginal and even though we would overlap the Capitol (Jerusalem?) those overlapped tiles are marginal too.

    i'm not sure if it's flood plain. i'll have to check the save. i'm about to run to an early lunch and will try to look at it then. but that's something i hadn't thought about. i was thinking about getting the resources, haveing a production city and closing in bismark.

    looking at the screen shot bismark can not go east. we are appearantly at the south of the continent. so bismark can go west until he runs into others or south until he runs out of room. i don't think we have the time to plant three cities to cut off bismark, and two depends on if he tries to expand west. i would hate to lose a good site to him. i would rather he expand south and think we should try to promote this.

    i'll check the save and know more then... unless you're able to right now?

    My mistake Dot I too think we should go with (iii)even though it will leave us vunerable we should beat Bismarck to that spot.

    Codeman/LuvtoBuild/Dot

    The spot I E of the proposed spot in LuvtoBuild's map is Desert from what I can tell having looked at the game again. NW are 2 FP so that spot is ideal too and I agree. (get the stone right away)

    Again Dot you are right ergo being "The Noble King Richard The Lionheart". It is indeed :food: and:hammers: that contribute to settler. I for some reason thought only food mattered.
    Now I read (I may be wrong) that stone needs to be directly in the city's direct area to give the full benefit.

    Dot

    :smoke: First time and perhaps overdoing it. Let's just play and we have 4 out 5 players agreeing on settler position. So Codeman you have the helm Paladin The Holy Knight. I am for getting to more settlers quickly as the other civs will box us in quickly.

    So it depends on how we want to play, with some input and make our own decisions as we see fit as we play the game. (my choice)
    For example we have a good plan but that changes should the AI declare war. (watch Genghis, or settle before us) then the player has to change strategy. I tend to be aggressive in the beginning looking to do axeman rush/or swords. (in this case Jags which aren't the greatest UU) Getting another capitol early can be a real benefit. Especially if the AI screws up my plans ARGH ATTACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Black Knight grunts and sighs for he longs for battle to fulfill the need of his bloodlust. However he knows the Great King likes "SCHMART" and "CLEVER" manner of battle without raising a sword. (gifting UN SGOTM never heard of that rather the brute force of Team One)

    We are here to learn from each other and yes mission accomplished. I have learned a few things MMing can be a real *^^&&%. We are on prince level so we will do good should that settler get that spot and hope no one wants war.

    So Codeman 40 turns and LuvtoBuild you follow Sir Brian The Noble. With all this nobility around the Black Knight seeks out the "Death Knight" ah but he is in garden of "Death Roses".

    Have fun

    I totally agree with the consensus that we should get a settler and grab that sweet spot ASAP. I took a peek at the save and 1 tile due W of the stone is a flood plain tile. So I think the spot I circled or one of the other spots that was suggested would be preferable. I like the forested river bend tile that the infamous Black Knight suggested for defensive reasons but it would mean losing a forest that we could have chopped and we would overlap four of Tenochtitlan's tiles instead of only two. The overlap probably wouldn't be a big deal though since we may have several priest specialists there anyway and the benefits of chopping the forest are debatable. I also noticed that with my suggestion we would end up with 3 unworkable desert tiles whereas Black Knight's suggested spot would only have two unworkable desert tiles. Of course one never knows when oil might show up in one of those spots and we could have been working it too :confused: . Ultimately your call Brother Paladin. Go forth and smite the Great King's enemies noble one.

    i'll play it and post this evening when i get home.

    As the fate of the knigdom rests in the hands of Paladin, the holy knight thinks of the hushed rumors about the Black Knight. The Black Knight's thirst for blood never was really satisfied. The bloodthirsty knight roamed the earth in search of a worthy foe. His only victims being a few wild animals. Poor creatures... Paladin doubts this will be the last the people see of the Black Knight.

    Now, with the people eager to establish a settlement nearby, Paladin has a plan! The people want growth and growth they will have. A settlement will be established in the mineral rich lands to the northeast. This will also bring the people closer to thier neighbor, Bismark. The holy knight hopes the new settlement will be safe...

    The holy knight hopes somewhere there is a higher power to protect the people during the establishment of the new settlement. He feels it would be prudent to set the scribes to researching some type of defenses. Maybe a weapon that would protect from a distance... He will have to give them this direction as soon as they finish whatever it is they are doing. Probably just playing with rocks or some such nonsense.

    Yes, a new settlement and weapons. It is settled.

    {Sir Brian places his hand on the Black Knight's shoulder}

    Patience dear brother. The world is full of heathen and the Great King will send us forth in due time. The Great King has come to me in visions and expressed a desire for us to learn his ways. He hopes it will be soon for he fears that our neighbors will seek the ways of the Evil Ones and will soon chose their path! He expresses hope though that we will put a stop to this madness and he has asked me to tell you and the Death Knight that your services will likely be needed sooner rather than later.

    Codeman,

    Great storytelling. It's aspect of this game I will enjoy very much.

    Black Knight grunts

    Paladin, The Holy Knight he have favor with the Gods grunts the Black Knight. He will bring more people into our kingdom and pursue great things I have heard. Perhaps a "tribute to the Gods" of our greatness. What the Paladin chooses will be the right one for he doth follow a righteous path. Such a path will lead us to find wealth, food, and materials for our great wonders. Looking to the lands the Paladin on his Great white horse with eyes that shine in the dark much like the Paladin's own eyes sees that it is good.

    There also rumours of Sir Brian the Noble in the lands. Such nobility to be in these lands is surely a sign from the Gods. Shall these nobles find us way to the "one God" some day so we shan't confuse ourselves with so many Gods. Ah confusion perhaps even such philosophy might become us with it's favor. Perhaps the Great King Richard the Lionheart will find his way to that endeavour or will he be looking to find the Christians. A belief heard of in distant lands but yet to found. Shall these crusaders one day find themselves in a Holy Quest sending off the evil ones in search of blood. Black Knight grunts and screams the bloodlust. YES MASTER!!!! Death Knight hisses on his dark horse with eyes of red. YES MASTER!!!!!

    Black Knight looks to Sir Brian the Noble and thanks him for his great words and says fight with me brother against the heathens to the death should it be necessary. Let us all fight together and spill blood MMMM much blood. :evil:

    And so it is the Knight's embark on their journey into the lands and we shall see what fruits they will discover.

    [Just thought I would have a little fun roleplaying. Hope you all enjoy. Let me know if you spot any glaring typos and such.]

    An Early History of Our World During the Reign of the Black Knight as written by Sir Brian the Noble

    It was in the year 4000BC that our people asked their leader, the glorious Black Knight, to found a settlement atop this hill that we call Tenochtitlan. The Black Knight saw that the land surrounding this hill was filled with many sources of food and rich in valuable resources. He was pleased and so he granted their request. He was tired of leading them aimlessly through the wilderness. He longed for a time when he could train the young men to be warriors and lead them into battle and so the great city of Tenochtitlan was born. He knew that it would be a few years before he could organize a decent army so in the meantime he directed his scouts to the northeast to explore the river valley that the surronding natives called The Valley of Glitter. He also directed the people to tame the sheep to the north in the hopes that they would one day be able to learn better methods for controlling these beasts and bringing them into submission.

    The Black Knight saw that the nearby ocean was teeming with fish so in the year 3985BC, he told the people that they should find a way to go out on the water and bring these fish home to their families so that their numbers would increase. The people obliged the Black Knight but told him that it might take many years before they would be successful. The Black Knight grunted but understood that progress takes time. In the meantime, his scouts had sent word that the river valley did indeed glitter for there were several deposits of gold hidden in the surrounding hills.

    In 3970BC, the Black Knight's scouts entered a local village in the Valley of Glitter. The natives were friendly and gave the scouts a gift of gold coin from the nearby hills. The scouts thanked the villagers and continued on their journey. They soon discovered a deposit of magnificent stones further to the East and a lush valley just south of where they stood. Several years later in 3955BC, they stumbled upon a neighboring civilization calling themselves the Germans. Our scouts reported the German leader was a jolly but somewhat arrogant man by the name of Bismarck. The scouts left the Germans in peace, hopeful that the peace would last but wary of the Germans future intentions. The scouts continued on their journey, stopping at the occassional native village for a brief rest. The villagers were kind to them through the years, bestowing gifts of gold to assist them in their journey.

    In 3895BC, the scouts encountered a new civilization. This warlike people referred to themselves as Mongolians and their leader was a fierce man by the name of Genghis Khan. The scouts might well have been afraid of these people and their leader if not for the fact that they felt their own master, the glorious Black Knight, was vastly superior to this Mongolian leader in both his cunning and desire for blood. So, they continued their journey and in the year 3820BC they encountered yet another civilization. These people called themselves the Malinese and the scouts described their leader, the honorable Mansa Musa, as a spiritual man with a fondness for riches and treasure.

    In the meantime, the glorious Black Knight had finally trained a bloodthirsty band of warriors! He could hardly suppress his glee as his brave men ventured out into the unknown. They soon encountered many a wild animal and quickly gained new expertise in conducting combat operations. They looked forward to the day when their leader would see fit to promote some of them to officers and add to the strength of their number. Back in Tenochtitlan, the Black Knight had seen fit to train another band of scouts. He saw that it was necessary for our people to visit the natives, learn the lay of the land, and meet our potential allies and enemies in the world. Some time later a friendly band of natives saw fit to join our people as scouts and so the land was mapped from the frozen southern tip of our continent to the jungles of the north. There was much more to be explored however so the scouts continued their journey. Unfortunately, the gods did not smile on the Black Knight during an encounter with several lions sometime around 3700BC. His bloodthirsty band of warriors had been promoted and were eager to show their worth. Legend has it that the Black Knight had ordered his band of warriors to attack the lions and catch them by surprise. The men were in good spirits and expected an easy victory. Perhaps it was their overconfidence that had angered the gods or perhaps thay had failed to pay homage just before the battle. All that is known for sure is that none of them lived to tell of the encounter. All were lost when the lions turned on the men and cuaght them off guard. The Black Knight was devastated and mourned the loss of his brave men. He vowed to avenge their deaths and see to it that they would always be remembered for their bravery.

    It was shortly after this time that the people of Tenochtitlan were finally able to comply with the request the Black Knight had made in 3985BC. They had discovered a method for constructing vessels made of wood that would float on the water and allow them to reach the fish along the coast. They had also constructed a device they called a net which would allow them to snare the fish and pull them into the wooden vessels they called boats. The Black Knight was pleased and commanded the people to build some of these boats and equip them with nets at once. The people went to work right away and by 3715BC they had built boats, equipped them with nets, and were busy at work catching fish along the coast.

    The Black Knight looked at what he had accomplished and was pleased. He was tired though from all these management duties and longed for adventure. And so, in the year 3715, he passed his torch to his successor Paladin, the Holy Knight. He spoke to the people upon his departure and promised that one day soon he would return. He promised to lead them faithfully into battle against their enemies, to smite the unbelievers with an iron fist, and to smote the cities of those who would dare to defy the might of our gods. The people rejoiced and bid the Black Knight farewell.

    And so, I, Sir Brian the Noble Knight, did inherit the reins of power from Paladin in the year 2815BC. I must say I was quite impressed with the progress that our people had made since I had last visited in 3715BC. A great deal of the land had been scouted and mapped under Paladin's rule. He had directed the people that they should settle in the Valley of Glitter and so they had, much to his delight. They called their new settlement Salvation, a most appropriate name for many expected it to be a great center of salvation. I am pleased to continue the work of Paladin and can only hope that I might bring glory upon our great civilization.

    I too enjoy the name of Salvation hadst I been thinking I should have found a name for our capitol. I think it can be renamed so if thy so wish it Sir Brian then proceed. I make note that we have Archery so let us put these defenders in our cities to defend against the heathens good Noble Knight. Once the glitter has been mined and Salvation grows we will advance in arts of research and find ourselves flowing with coin. Perhaps thou shalt decide to camp the furs first for the coin and happiness. It is your call Sir Brian. Our Paladin has shown great leadership and wisdom in his reign.

    It would be indeed a good thing at same point to settle once again and slow our rival "Bismarck" and leave him to the land of ice and snow. There he will stay weak and should he not turn to our God then we will convince him with the sword.

    Black Night grunts with a feeling that the bloodlust is nigh. Soon too we will need the art of capturing animals and sowing the land but that will happen as we proceed. For now Paladin The Holy Knight is wise is seeking the monotheistic God of the Jews. This pleases the people "The Holy Ones" as they get confused what God to please with so many.

    And the days of Paladin, the Holy Knight, begin.

    Paladin, having given his brother the Black Knight a break from the intricate details of managing the people, considers the rumors of his dear brother. The people didn't know him. They only knew his great fighting skill, and the blackened color of his armor. He was thus called The Black Night. They didn't know him. They didn't know he was set with one purpose, thier success. The holy knight sighed, one day they would know.

    Now the lives of the people were in the hands of the holy knight. His first order of business was to begin plans for a future city. Paladin had spoken in great length with his brothers the Black Knight, Sir Brian The Noble, Richard the Lionheart, The Death Knight. The five brothers had discussed in great length were to establish the new settlement for the people. It was decided the mineral rich lands to the northeast were ideal for the success of the people.

    So the holy knights first order was to begin the preparations for the establishment of the new settlement. It would be called Salavation. The settlement would be close to Bismark's lands, and would be glad to offer salvation to the neighboring heathens of Bismark.

    Then Paladin issues orders to continue the scouting, as knowledge of the lands was very important if they going to be defended from attack by other tribes.

    This meant weapons would be also needed. The holy knight now needed the scribes. And what were those scribes doing. They daily play with stone and mud. Thay try to explain this is important for the future. Paladin ceases interupting the scribes in hopes they will hurry up this nonsense.

    The scouts report back much new land. No new peoples though. throughout thier exporation many wild animals attack the scouts. Many times the scouts are victorious. Paladin is even so impressed with the loyality of one scouting unit he promotes the entire unit! They withstood attacks from wolves, panthers, lions, and bears. But even this great unit had it's limits. They were surprised one night while they slept by a pack of wolves. Not one of the great scouts survived. Thier bodies were found by another scouting party. The families of these scouts still mourn the honor of these great explorers.

    Finally one day a scribe comes rushing up to Paladin, filled with excitement he exclaims, "We've done it! It's to be called Masonry! Can you believe it!?!"

    "It's about time," the holy knight cuts him off. This was the long awaited day. The scribe tried to explain the details of Masonry, but Paladin didn't care. He ordered all scribes to immediately begin research on some type of weapon. It wood have to utilize only the available resourses. The scribes, full of pride and chests puffed up, left at once to begin the new task.

    Soon thereafter a small group set out to establish Salvation. Paladin ordered the assembling of some warriors to protect both cities. The first he sent to guard the kingdom from possible attack in the northwest.

    Before all troops had finished being assembled the holy knight began speaking to Sir Brian The Noble. Paladin wanted a break. He had found a beautiful young girl. The girl had caught his eye. Sir Brian ordered Paladin to forget everything for a while. Sir Brian would take care of the people. Without any hesitation the holy knight agreed and took off to the country to be with the beauty that had caught his eye. As Sir Brian watched Paladin leave he silently hoped this wasn't a mistake the people would regret...
