HN02-A The Pacifist Power of Religion

1-1643
Despite the odds (2,9%) our galley attacks and defeats Hatty's Caravel. Miracle. Traded pirinting press for guilds some money and map from JC. Started banking.

2-1646
Caesar shows up:

We said no, but we are still good friends with him.

3-1649
Hatty launches a sneak attack on our soil:

The two archers in our capital got upgraded to longbows, and our position looks strong.

4-1652
Two grenadiers and a longbow die in the first wave of the attack. We suffer no losses. A BM fails to spread the religion in MM's capital.

5-1655
The second wave of the attack: Hatty's longbows attack and die. No losses on our side.

6-1658
Hatty still has a catapult outside the city, I attack it with our maceman (80% odds) and the maceman dies, it seems that we ran out of luck at the end. A longbow finishes the cat.

8-1664
Dialed up Hatty, but she refused to give us anything for peace. No peace then.

9-1667
Banking came, I started astronomy and used the GS to lightbulb part of the research.

10-1670
Nothing.

Countdown

T minus 5,4,3,2,1, liftoff we have engine burn and ICBM's are airborne.

Try to play tonight got two other SG's or maybe three to play. Had a glitch with my account the other day so still recovering from that.

Totally slipped my mind this one and will play later tonight. EDIT: More likely tomorrow sometime something came up.)

EDIT: Just got warlords and got a little wrapped up in it.

I am up in three SG's right now and am facing a busy weekend working/sleeping. Just getting Warlords didn't help and am hooked on that puppy and like it much better than the vanilla. If anybody wants to take this go ahead but I promise I will try tonight after work around 10:00pm EST Day.

Well I'm sorry due to time constraints I will have no pretty pictures but a short turn report.

Turn 1

Lahore builds BM (ballistic missile heading for Russia)
start theater to cope with Cyrus creative influence

Turn 2

We have no GP farms anywhere????
Wow what a crappy island resource wise. Delhi has nothing special to it whatsever not even cottages. Bombay is much better in that department.

Turn 3

Madras builds mace build another

Turn 4

zzzzzzzz

Turn 5

Zhou builds mace start caravel
Sell Catherine some horsies for 6 gold. Figure that will help her kicking Hatty's butt.
Also traded earlier to Julius deer for 4 gold.

Turn 6-Turn 7

zzzzzzzz

Turn 8

We discover Astronomy
Zhou starts observatory

Back on turn 5 I begged and pleaded with everybody for tech help but they all wanted to keep us stupid.

Lahore (sounds indecent) starts Galleon for our attack on Hatty.

Turn 9-Turn 10

zzzzzzz

After looking closely I think we should move the palace from Delhi to Bombay where the commerce is for the bureaucracy boost. Delhi isn't producing that much commerce a base of 38 whereas Bombay is 51. Much better and will improve science in Bombay quite a bit. Bombay without Bureau has 61 and Delhi with it has 62. With bureau Bombay would be much better as a capitol.

(reduce maintenance to for more central location)

In addition we might want to have some fun and build a enough of a military to take on Hatty. We should do that with grennies and not sure if we have Chemistry yet which we don't otherwise Frigates would have been available. I don't remember seeing in the tech lineup to research but maybe I missed and the next player can make sure and if we need a prerequisite change to that as grennies would do much better since she likely has rifles.

Looked at the save. Now that Cat and Hat are at peace we should bury the hatchet ourselves. After economics maybe we head for nationalism and constitution, democracy, corporation. We still need to be building some moderner units so we don't fall totally behind on power.

Pre-Turn
I surveyed our position to refresh myself on where we are in the world. We are still struggling to catch up but things don't seem utterly impossible at the moment. I'm still not convinced we can actually manage a win but I'm still willing to try. I made peace with Hatty since Cathy has already made peace and we are not in a position to get serious about war. I managed to get 60 gold in addition to the peace treaty. I noticed we are researching Economics. I don't think this was a bad choice but I think Scientific Method might have been better. We don't have The Great Library or a large number of monasteries so we're not going to lose much in the way of beakers. JC and Cathy don't yet have SM so it would be a good trade if we can get to it before they do.

Turn 1

Turn 2
Spread Buddhism to Neopolis.

Turn 3
Hatty asks for Open Borders. I considered it but decided to decline in order to keep Cathy happy. I figured she wouldn't be too happy with us if we started trading with Hatty. Cathy appeared to be upset with Washington though when I last spoke to her. Perhaps she's picked someone else to hate for a while.

Turn 4

Turn 5
JC asks to trade world map for world map. I chose to haggle a bit and managed to get 60 gold in addition to his world map in exchange for our world map. We finished Economics so I went to the civics screen right away and debated about our options. I noticed we had Serfdom available and could chose it for no additional upkeep and no anarchy since we are spiritual. I revolted to Free Market and Serfdom. We don't have any real way to take advantage of Caste System and our workers still have some improving to do so Serfdom seemed like a good choice since it wouldn't cost us any more, at least not at the moment anyway.

I looked at possible tech trades and noticed that Hatty did not yet have Economics. I wasn't sure if I should make such a trade since Cathy might get upset. I went to look at relations and noticed she is neutral with Hatty despite the war. Apparently, she likes Hatty's civics choices, doesn't mind so much that Hatty razed a Russian city, and isn't too awfully upset by Hatty's cultural pressure. So net relations are 0 with Hatty. Hatty, on the other hand is reasonably annoyed with Cathy but not furious. Cathy seems to be much more annoyed towards Washington and the feeling looks to be mutual. So, I figure she won't mind too much if we trade a tech to Hatty. I trade Economics to Hatty in exchange for Engineering, her world Map, and 450 gold. She wouldn't budge on any other techs. I tried to get Gunpowder or Replaceable Parts but would have settled for Liberalism or Nationalism. She was only willing to go with Engineering so I settled for that and grumbled a bit. We could use Engineering of course but its a cheap tech at this point and I would have preferred something a little more valuable to us. At least it's one more tech closer to parity with JC and Cathy.

Turn 6

Turn 7

Turn 8

Turn 9

Turn 10
JC asked for a trade embargo against MM. Our relations aren't bad with MM and I figured the -1 with JC wouldn't hurt us too much. Hopefully, it will fade soon. JC seems to be antagonizing everybody. I didn't really think it would be prudent for us to join him in that nonsense.

All in all, we are slowly gaining ground I think. We've passed Cathy in score for the moment since Hatty apparently captured and razed one of her cities. It would have been nicer if Hatty had been the one to lose a city since we will probably never get her vote. BTW, the war was technically illegal and therefore we've technically lost. It appears that Cathy was the one to start trouble by attacking Hatty. We aren't supposed to be supporting aggression. Unfortunately, being buddy buddy with Cathy is probably our one chance to get some votes along with JC. Of course, if JC starts a war and asks for help, we'll be in violation there too if we join the effort. From a normal game standpoint, it would be smart to help him and keep him happy but variant wise, it's against the rules. I guess we should decide if we want to pull this one out of the hat bad enough to say screw the rules or if we want to stick to the rules more strictly from here on out and probably lose.

I went with mostly infrastructure builds even though doing so is probably treading on thin ice. I'm torn between building units that will need upgrading or building science and gold multipliers which are sorely needed. We now have a market, grocer, and bank in Delhi which helped out a bunch. I was able to kick the science up to 80% when the grocer completed. We still have a decent surplus to support units or build a treasury for upgrades. I hate to drop our science to 0% for mass upgrading later so I've been gambling by not building medieval units when I am hoping to get the techs for grens and riflemen soon. As soon as SM is finished, we need to see what we can get for it from Cathy and JC. We should probably trade to Cathy first since trading to JC first and then waiting a turn to see what Cathy now has available would be risky. There is a good chance JC will be taking advantage of SM too and for free  However, getting GP and RR from JC and then picking up Rifling or Chemistry from Cathy on the next turn would get our military up to par quickly. I'm just not sure if we could pull it off without screwing ourselves. Cathy is bound to have something JC wants and he will probably screw us over by trading it to her first.

After SM, I recommend we make a beeline for Mass Media. There are some good techs that we can trade to our pals along the way. Military techs can be obtained through trade. Also, Liberalism would be a good tech to pick up soon in a trade or as a gift. Free Speech and Free Religion would give us a decent boost. I think we might have a shot at beating Cyrus to Mass Media but we need to act quickly which means we don't get ourselves sidetracked on techs which we can do without for now. I know we need to get current in the military department but I think we can do that by trading to JC and Cathy. Getting Emancipation soon will be necessary but I think we can get by without it for a little while.

I considered that option but then I figured that if we go to Free Speech soon, it wouldn't matter where the capital is except for the purpose of maintenance costs. So, I'm not sure if moving the palace would be worth the investment in hammers. We have the FP available and could put it somewhere if maintenance is an issue. This idea is certainly something that we should have considered about a hundred years ago but now we are probably close to getting Liberalism through trade. I'm not opposed to moving it if somone wants to do so. I'd recommend concentrating on getting unis built for Oxford to go there first though.

Got it. May be a couple of days before I get to play.
War with Hatty was my fault; I didn't check the turnlog to see who declared first.
I shall head towards scimeth and look for trades. May build a few units, possibly replace some of the naff ones but I'll have to look at the save properly first.

Played my turns. Little to report:

1732. Zhou build grocer, starts crossbow.

1736. Circei converts to buddhism.

1738.trade maps with Hats

1744. Discover sci-meth. No trades available! Start gunpowder.

1750. Ardea and Tyre convert to Buddhism.

And that's basically it.
If we want to tech trade we need to get off the beaten track tech-wise. Chemistry and Steel usually good options for trading.

Save:

Quiet set of turns. Just infrastructure and a couple of muskets after Gunpowder came in. Went with Chemistry after Gundpowder, but by the time we got it there weren't any good trades available. Got some gold from Caesar for it so I could run slider at 100% for a while.

Replaceable parts in about 3 turns (went for it for the production boost from lumbermills). Steel is already out there so I don't see a lot of good trade opportunities in the near future. We dropped a little farther behind on tech in my set, but we have observatories and universities that will come in soon to help. We should make universities a priority until we get enough for Oxford.

It isn't a great position at this point, but I don't think it is hopeless. None of the AI have jumped out to a huge lead so far.

There are 2 ICBMs on their way to the American coast and one caravel waiting for another.

Save is attached.

Well at least we seem to be teching fairly quickly now. Unfortunately, the AI still has a good lead on us. At least we'll be catching JC soon and we're not that far behind Cathy tech wise. We've already surpassed her in score. I think after Replaceable Parts, we should be concentrating on getting to Physics and make our way to Mass Media. If we are lucky, we can pick up some trades by going down that path. We should be able to defend ourselves decently with Grenadiers. If we can pickup Railroad sometime through trade, then we can upgrade to MGs. Rifling would be nice but I'd rather get Mass Media as soon as possible. We really don't need Rifling for defense. The goal right now is to get the UN if at all possible. We've steered away from that goal recently. That's not a bad thing necessarily but now that we have grens, let's get back on the diplo track. I think we might still have a shot at getting the UN before Cyrus.

Dis is moving very slowly gents. If omurtag doesn't take it by tomorrow I can grab it and play/post. OKKKKIIIIIII DOKKKKIEEEEE

Hey guys feel like playing a warlords game as the Vikings. I like the idea of a Viking raping/pillaging/plundering campaign anybody game? War games seem to offer more entertainment than peaceful games. zzzzzzzzzz whoops almost nodded off there. Maybe we can come up a with theme.

HN Power of the Vikings Blood N Guts......

I've been thinking of trying this one again sometime on a Pangea map with 18 civs. That shouldn't be too boring :) I've also thought about making it an OCC for an added challenge, maybe with a custom inland sea map and single city isle in the middle. I've thought it would be interesting to try Ghandi in Warlords with an abundance of food for specialists.

Anyway, omurtag has been pretty good about picking up but if he hasn't by tomorrow, I don't mind if you pick it up. I would like to see this one pick up some momentum again so that we can either pull out a win soon or at least lose with dignity and get it over with quickly,

Playing as the Vikings would be interesting. I started one as them a little while back and the Berserker is pretty nice. I never finished though. I think the Amphib promotion is retained after upgrade isn't it? Be cool to have some Amphib city raider grens / infantry.
