HNDY16 Open SG - Byz Always War Sid Tiny Island Map

I'd be interested in a new one, but I'm currently in 5 SG (counting Handy16) plus trying to keep up with xOTMs, so I'm in no hurry to start another one. Two of my SG's are nearing completion and two more still have a ways to go and then there is this one which could end soon or could develop.

Pre-Turn

IT Russia finishes the GL, well

2. 710BC
nth much

3. 690BC

IT  Russian galley drops archer from the east

6. 630BC
our archer kills Russian archer

7. 610BC
nth much

handy16550.jpg

Well I will official got it.

However, before I play what is the palace for since we LOST the GL?

the palace is the SoZ which we can build after maths comes in

This is getting really ugly: we didn't get the GL and we already have a KAI. Russia will propably take out the Aztecs and fill other islands before anyone, so they'll go for both domination and 60K.

Domination is easy enough to prevent.. once we have enough dromons to kill all their boats they wont be able to expand to any more islands.. and we are still far away from them getting 60k

550 BC
It looks strange seeing a road before clearing jungle. I am glad I cleared the map and saw the dyes. I stick with the heavy dromon builds, though we want another settler soon. There is still a gap on our island, and we should settle the island in point-blank range.

530 BC
Lethal sea-bombardment is just so cool.
(IT) Russian completes the Hanging Gardens. We are suffering from a serious tech hole at the moment.

510 BC
Did I mention I like lethal sea-bombardment?
(IT) The next research project is Burial since we can complete it in 4 turns, and need to head toward Monarchy.

490 BC
Guess what I used?

470 BC
(IT) The tech deficit is even worse. The Russians have completed Sun Tzu.

430 BC
I have begun to bombard tiles in Russia.
(IT) The next science project is Mysticism in 4 turns at a slight deficit.

390 BC
I just found a new island that has exactly one tile, and that tile is tundra.
(IT) We now control the Statue of Zeus. It will take 8 turns to build the barracks, so the first AC will be regular. :(

370 BC
The tech pace is really scary. Russia is now building Leo's.

Summary:
I am not impressed with Dromons and land bombarding. I really didn't make much of a dent into the Russian development.

I'll take a turn and play tonight PST. Any thoughts. It looks like an interesting hole. Can our dromons pull us out?

Welcome to the team dudes! :goodjob:

Summary:
I am not impressed with Dromons and land bombarding. I really didn't make much of a dent into the Russian development.

Dromons miss ALOT. We need to build a lot of dromons to both pillage the AI and to prevent them from grabbing any more land. If we can settle the rest of the land and totally pillage the tech pace will slow down.

Enough dromons and we don't need a lot of military in this phase since they will not be able to reach us.

But why listen to me, I already lost this game once.

Wow Russia is a runaway on techs. They must be stopped. Look at those wonders, colossus in 3150 pyramids in 2270 Lighthouse 1525 and GL in 730 all in Moscow. The good news is on the power graph Russia is weak. They are a Republic but must be at max WW with our bombardment. Plus their core is only 3 cities. Aztecs and Arabs are in the AA and way behind in tech. They also appear to be DOA in research. This game is over, we will win easily :goodjob: .

Pre: Research down a notch and mysticism still in one. Switch Constantinople to settler. We need more cities and workers and as the only city with the granary it will do better at under size 6. Russian galley appears near our Southern Island. I can't decide whether to attack with the two currgahs or bring them home for upgrades. I decide to bring them home I think once we get a bit of military we can take out any cities the Russians put down. I also hate to lose namesake ships

330: Turn off research to accumulate cash for three currgah upgrades and future research. At the moment I think we need either currency or lit. I would actually think the best thing we can do is to expand and crank out dromons and settlers and workers. I think it would be best to stay despotic for awhile and build up military and Navy. Russia is the big/only concern and I think we should try to put that genie back in the bottle. Their power is not much different than our own surprisingly. We should take out there outlying holdings. It may actually be possible to do a great library capture although from the research of the others it wouldn't do much for us now.

310 Constantinople completes settler starts Harbor. Lux to 0. successfully bombard 2 Russian tiles. Positioning Navy bring home currgahs.

290 Russians complete knights templar. Russians land a single horse and our brave archer deals with it losing only 1 HP. Bomb the offending Russian galley all the way back to port and finally sink him.

270 Our first ancient cavalry is produced, a reg. :(

250 Sink an Arab galley. Ceseara Rax to granary. Constantinople Harbor to dromon-- our golden age is over. Found Varna in the Southern jungle.

230: Oh-Oh St. Petersburg is showing a musket.

210 Upgrade Bugsy.

190 Russians start Sistine. Constant Dromon to settler, upgrade Gator.

170 Sink another Arab galley in port.

150: Upgrade Rat.

Well I also did a fair amount of bombarding but mostly moving ships toward the Russian core. It would say the Aztecs are essentially dead, drown in their own units. The Arabs are sending out ships but are not researching much. We have essentially three good cities and I'd like to have granary's in all of them, which are almost done and then do settlers alternating with dromons. Don't forget a few things about Dromons. First if you hit a ship it will usually retreat sometimes even if it has units to drop off and is right at the coast. You can sink ships in port by bombarding so you can follow a ship back to port hitting it along the way and sink it in the city. Ships are the first thing hit by the bombard. When you have enough Dromons you can use them to starve cities depending on how many coast tiles are used and the quality of the inland terrain. It looks like Russia has some pretty lush terrain so this may not work all that well. Another idea developed by Aggie which we could really use is to send along a few cheap warriors and capture stacks of workers from the Russians as they try to repair the terrain along the coast. This is a suicide mission but nets us support free workers which we need badly.

In my opinion we should expand like crazy. I put in a dot map which you may or may not like. I would first suggest that we do the tiny 2 tile Island with the hill to the east. The reason being this can be completely defended with just one warrior and allows us to watch for any Russian ships coming across there and basically backup our dromon defense closer to home. We might do all the tiny island's as they are easy to defend and we don't want the AI to get them. I would say we need lots of cities now and although they will be corrupt and somewhat useless they can produce a dromon every 30 turns and will provide unit support. As far as research goes I turned it off. I don't think we need or want monarchy anytime soon and it will cost a lot to get there. I would now do ironworking and then maybe the minimum on currency. I needed the $$ for upgrades but it can now be turned on. I hate to research in AW at anything but last civ prices or as a scientific civ without libraries. I don't see the others getting to currency anytime soon. There's no way we catch up to Russia researching at second on Sid level. Any money we collect during minimal research can be used for maximal research at last civ prices. Finally I would focus all of our efforts on Russia. Tons of Dromons to bombard their core and starve any cities down if that is possible. We should also start the worker capture at some point. We need to cripple them before they get frigates. We should be able to capture their Island holdings at some point with AC and horses or better yet swords using the Dromons as our arty.

who's next? maybe handy himself?

Well I can't play this soon, but who wants it?

the rules says 3 other players in between, we need someone to play, Gyathaar, Gator? or anyone else, just give it a try.

I think I can squeeze it in today.
