HNDY16 Open SG - Byz Always War Sid Tiny Island Map

400AD: looks a bit ugly, all our offensive units seem to be pullingt defensive duty. So my plan is to build defensive units where I can, play musical dromons, and get a pseudo-SOD up and running. I will keep St Petersburg & Moscow blockaded as well.

410AD: A russian caravel fights through the blockade, sinking a dromon. It is pursued and sunk. Also discover some dromons and workers on goto orders. :(

420AD: Agree with LK, I like lethal sea bombard :) Sink a caravel in port.
Dyrrachium founded

430: Russia builds Sistine Chapel

440: Russia has Galleons, sink 2 of them in port
Resistance in Yekaterinburg finally ends
Septum founded

450: Russia has Cossacks

460: Sink another galleon

470: And another

480: Russia builds Newton's Uni in Moscow. Moscow built a galleon last turn, so they must have used an SGL.

490: Pseudo SOD goes to work. 10 Dromons bombard Rostov, reducing the defence to 2 redlined muskets, and a 3/4 cossack. 6 Ancient Cav attack, 2 die and the cossack promotes, but Rostov falls:

HNDY16Rostov.jpg

And another galleon too.

500AD: And another.

Russia has lost their iron, which is nice, but I'd much rather find their saltpetre. Once the ancient cav have healed, we can go and take the other small russian island, or start on the aztecs or arabs. Russia can't be too far away from riflemen. The blockades are working well, Moscow and St Petes are each mostly just cranking out 1 galleon every 2 turns for us to sink.

450: Russia has Cossacks

Gotta make sure we sink all Russian boats and pillage them to the hilt.

Nice job on taking the city.

What a powerhouse roster of SG players. :)

It's available...pick it up

Along that line the gold has to stay cut by St Pete. It now has irrigation and has reroaded the hill. So all three tiles are now giving commerce.

Anything come of those warriors that were send to grab the workers?

They must not get boat full of units loose or a frigate out. With 6 Droms on Moscow they should not get out of the harbor without a big RNG.

Anyone who has been playing right along, know what the last build was for St Pete? I am sure that Moscow has all the structures done, but I am not sure about the other two cities on the island.

If Pete made a unit recently, then it probably has all done as well. If so it needs to get covered soon as it will be making a frigate for sure.

Pete and Nov both have two wonders, but with the tundra Nov is probably at least down a University, maybe one other structure. It won't be long before they start up builds of units or ships. A uni cost them 80 shields not going to take a long time.

Do you know if they got Steam for free and hence no more Crusaders or not.

Anything come of those warriors that were send to grab the workers?

Have no idea what you mean. Our warriors going to find furriners? Or our workers in danger? Don't remember warriors doing anything except getting transported around to free up the ancient cav.

Moscow and Petes both built nothing but boats, apart from Moscow's SGL wonder. So they're trying to build transport for the cossacks they have, and hopefully will keep it up as long as we keep sinking them. Unfortunately Dromon's land bombard can be very ineffectual, so St petes is getting its tiles improved again. One lucky RNG turn and they're all bare again though.

Haven't a clue what Russia's free IA tech is, I could only infer techs from units I saw or wonder pop-ups. They may not be in the IA yet, I have no idea if they even have Physics yet.

The warriors were to amphib take exposed workers from Russia, then move the workers to the ship. It would be worth sacrificing a warrior to get the free labor. They were NOT meant for defense duty.

Oh they are in the next age and I would say we can presume they did not get Nat or we would see a rifle on top in Moscow. So they either got Medicine or Steam.

I mean they built Newtons right? They have frigates and galleons, so they know Mag, that means they are in the next age. It surely means they are researching Nationalism, regardless which tech they got.

Upgrades from Musket to Rifle are 20x3=60, but for them it is a lot less and they have Leo. So I would figure if they have Nat, we would see a rifle in Moscow. I would not bet my life on it, but it is a good bet.

So ships need to get to St Pete to stop any ships from getting out. You could probably get away with using an AC to grab the workers once they are forced back to those two far tiles and no roads connect those tiles. We have not seen any horse units on that land, so they may not have horses any longer.

Or it could be that they just have not build any yet on the main island as they have been doing other builds. So in that case an AC could get the worker and return before confronted. Won't work if they have roads to the tile or have Cossacks.

I would bet they do not and if we see the ships coming up on schedule, they are not making anything else.

Fair enough. There were no warriors on boats at the start of my turns, I don't think there were even any outside cities, and I hadn't noticed that suggestion in the thread. It's still a feasible plan to keep leaching away russia's workers, as the blockades of moscow and st petes mean there's always workers in range.

Not any complaint, just point of fact. I had a warrior loaded off of Varna and one coming in Yakwhatever with the dromon waiting. Not an issue, you did fine job and it is very hard to figure out what all is going on when you step into the middle of a game.

That is why I made an attempt to mention what I was thinking, but as usual I obfiscated it with too much BS. I should have made a big box with all points to be aware of listed and no other dialog.

Even then I inherited a couple of ships parked and was not sure why or what I should have done with them. Were they a guard or just over looked, don't know.

Let's get that last Russian island and then plan a landing in Azteca. From there we can march on Russia.

Russia must be our focus, they are running away with only three cities.

I wouldn't attack Aztecs since that would only open up land for Russia to settle. I would attack the other AI first to get an MGL possibly.

By the way, I assume if we do for domination, we should be able to achieve that fast, but do we want that or rather conquest?

Yeah Yaroslavl or whatever it is called is ripe, if those AC's can be dropped on it soon and the Droms can get those exposed units down to 1 or 2 HP's.

Russia must be getting a lot of gold from those tourist attractions to fund such good research out of 4 cities. Well libs+uni + two cities have science wonders helps.

Well I see a lot of talk, but no got it.

This is an official "got it".

Is the goal a win by domination or by conquest?

If we are going for domination we really should start building some culture buildings.

Handy, can we get a win target? IMO domination is much more viable.

One thing that is sad is the tech pace. It is pretty late in the game, and we don't have the option to build courts or markets. I really wish we had literature for some cheap culture buildings.

Not having the FP even started is pretty bad. I start that at Adrianople with it due in 28 turns. We need to start improving productivity.
(IT) I get to watch an absurd number of AI troops move around. I suspect I will see this every round.

530 AD
(IT) A Russian ship sinks a dromon!
I watch a Russian galleon end in ocean tiles. This is getting ugly. I think there is a settler on-board.

I only manage to injure the Russian galleon. :(
(IT) I am happy to see the injured ship head back to port. :)

540 AD
Operation worker theft succeeds by Yaroslavl'. We have gained one worker.

550 AD
Russia is now showing visible riflemen.

560 AD
The workers from the razed city have made it home.

580 AD
Operation worker steal snags 2 from the Russian homeland.

600 AD
Operation Yaroslavl' has begun.
(IT) The injured Cossack surprises me and attacks our AC. The good news is that it is dead.

610 AD
I have to waste several of the galleons by Yaroslavl' to sink a ship that left St. Petersburg.

The spearman and archer are easily destroyed.

Nicomedia, the ultimate iceberg city is formed. I felt this would be the first place Russia would try to build a city if they ever left port. Of course, any new city helps us toward domination.
(IT) We lost an AC to a Cossack that was hiding in the city.

The nice thing is that we lost NO units razing the city. :D
I hope the loss of unit support starts to slow down the runaway Russians.

Summary:
Sorry about the extra turns, but I didn't feel it was right to turn the game over right at the start of the landings. The next person should play either 8 or 13 turns to even things out.

We need to decide the goal how to win this ASAP. If the goal is domination, then we want to rush to literature. We can probably double the percentage of world just via borders expansions. IMO this is the ONLY practical way to win. Russia is to far ahead in tech to be able to pull of conquest.

We badly need the FP. Please keep it building. Corruption and lack of cash flow is killing us. I hope when we become a monarchy it will further improve.

Thanks for keeping this moving along. :)

Either domination or conquest are ok by me. Dom usually is easier faster, so let's target that.
