HOF Questions & Answers

Also, some of the civ specific unique abilities require barbarians. With barbarians off, put Bismarck in as an AI opponent every game with no worries of his UA generating a large military force to attack you with.

Thanks for the thread link, I assumed something like that may exist.

It seems to me that its a major disadvantage to not use them if only the value to city states, and most games I just set them to raging because it hurts the AI way more than me. I was just curious mainly for island maps where they are super tedious to deal with, without going Honor that is.

Question#1 (Still Unanswered)

Is there a way to view the settings when loading games submitted to the HOF,... I know basic information is displayed when acquiring a submitted game from the HOF tables, and also in "Details" on the In Game "Menu".

What about more detailed information,...Like "5 Billion Years", or "Raging Barbarians"....How can I acquire this information?

Obviously the HOF Staff has the ability to check details that are prohibited for HOF game play, so it must be possible to attain from submitted games.
We have the Game Options but not things like "5 Billion Years". Don't think we put the game options on any of the screens. It's big list.

Have you tried downloading and opening the save? You have to have same patch and DLC, so you are kind of limited to the more current stuff.

Actually, that is what I am referring to...

I am downloading the saves, and I am looking for those details "In Game",.....

If you LOAD a game it doesn't change your settings when exiting back to the main menu, therefore you need to acquire this information from the downloaded version "In Game", and I have NO IDEA if the detailed options are displayed somewhere,

How does the HOF staff know when someone submits a illegal game with "Abundant Resources" or "No Barbarians"?, or is this all part of a "Honesty Policy" when submitting. Because if this information is able to be tracked, then I should have no problem finding that information in the same location,....Right?

I have also been wondering about this. The HOF game rules regarding options seem a little ambiguous and I wonder if they have been interpreted correctly by all members!

Your little anecdote wouldn't happen to be from the dwarf in Game of Thrones by any chance?

We can see if someone is not using the correct option :)

Be careful what you wish for. Right now, there are only two things stopping people from hacking their savegames.

1) They don't know how.
2) They think it's hard.

If the HOF staff show you exactly how to extract that information from a file, that's also a clue as to how one could modify it. I wouldn't ask unless you want that can of worms opened.

I still don't understand, Why anyone would ever hack a game save?,....How is that fun...? Competitive..? Helping you become a better player..? (It's not like were playing for money, or some hot girl is going to sleep with me because I was gold medalist for last months Gauntlet)

I understand where you are coming from 100% and I agree, but there are people out there who will hack things or cheat at the simplest of games if they can. With computer stuff, there are plenty of preteens and up who will hack anything simply because they can. I have been to the World Boardgaming Champipnships in the US and it is just for fun, not money etc. and 99% of the players are great about everything. Always a couple though who will try to bend the rules or palm a few Eurogame chits ingame as a compulsion. Yes, hard to understand, but the behavior exists unfortunately.

This is analogous to how I feel about the criminal justice system. Threat of punishment doesn't deter criminals, it deters average citizens from *becoming criminals*.

There's a threshold of effort and/or risk that most people won't consciously cross. The lower that threshold, the more people will cross it. In other words, if you make something easy or risk-free enough, even normally honest people will misbehave.

That is, IMHO, because honesty, morals and ethics are not a binary on/off switch where you either have it or you don't. It's more like a sliding scale. There is a certain point at which people will pocket money they find in a wallet instead of returning it to a lost and found. How much money it takes to trigger that reaction depends on the person. This is the entire basis for multiple reality shows, so it's a proven phenomena.

Anyway, I'd just like to keep that barrier sufficiently high (IE not something you can easily search for on these forums)... It's not like the information isn't out there. After all, people have posted *unreleased source code* from Civ5, proving that somewhere out there, hackers have full source for the game. Which makes it trivial to reverse engineer the save games.

I only wish it were so easy to mod the game to fix bugs.

On that subject, I think it says a lot about the Civ5 community that various CIV5 users have come up with unquestionably better UI and more balanced gameplay than the original devs, despite the exposed mod functionality being quite limited. I think it would benefit Firaxis to expose more of the source code, because I believe the community would do a lot of their work for them, finding gameplay issues, proposing fixes, playtesting those fixes in their own mods. It's really a win/win for everyone. But I digress. :P

Sooooo, i have a question regarding HOF.

You just go to the HOF website, check the existing entries. Say Deity, babylon, pangea, standard pace\size. And then play the same game on a random map following the HOF rules (auto save every turn, enhance number of auto save kept, etc...) and then submit the 4 saves for that game on the website ?

There aint something like a specific HOF setup every month or anything ? You just pick existing setup and try to compete with the results ?

That is correct.
There are monthly gauntlets, check them out :)

Ok cool. Thanks

I saw the gauntlet but i like the DCLs better. Everyone playing the same map is fun :crazyeye:

Yes HOF is really for people that want to compete and pursue optimal play as measured by the efficiency metric of earliest turn time win. And no replaying turns or previous map knowledge. Really tough, and not for everybody, I absolutely agree. DCLs are fun too, just different.

I can see how shared map experiences are fun too definitely, but I like HoF games because every time I start a new game, I have a new uncharted world to explore and create my own story with. The HoF threads are places where people can share their unique experiences and tips for better/faster play. So HoF is also a fun shared experience, just different.

1) Log onto the Hall of Fame website via the Login/Submit link.

2) Go to the Submit Game page, read the Hall of Fame honor code guidelines and click the checkbox to confirm you followed them.

3) In the initial save upload box, upload your autosaveinitial save file for your game from the "auto" folder in your save folder.

4) In the 1/3 game progress save box, upload 1 of your save files from abput 1/3 of the way through your game. If you set your autosave settings properly according to the HoF rules which are linked to on many pages, you should have autosaves from every turn.

5) Upload a save file from about 2/3 of the way through your game in the next box.

6) In the last box, upload a savefile you made after getting your victory screen and hitting "just one more turn" and then saving.

7) Hit the submit button and you are good.

Hope that helps.

thank you very much i'm going to try:thumbup:

I seem to be unable to register on the HoF site. I registered a couple of days ago but never received an email. I also tried the reset password feature but same there (yes I've checked the spam folder). Then I sent an email, but I have not gotten a reply to that either, so now I'm hoping someone here could help. My username and email are the same as on this forum.
