Scientists breed cute tame foxes

Forget hounds - foxes could become man's newest best friend, as scientists have shown they can be tamed.
After 45 years of breeding, tame foxes that wag their tails, greet humans with excited barks and look cute have been born in Siberia.

The original foxes were all black, but the new critters have white patches, big floppy ears, and curly tails.

The new foxes are also more curious, better at understanding humans, and less frightened of new things.

The scientists bred about 45,000 foxes to get to the tame stage.

When breeding the animals, they only chose them on how well they responded to people.

But the physical changes came as well - making scientists think cuteness comes along with being tame.

Yaaaaay! Foxes will be pets soon! :goodjob:  [party] :jesus: :worship: :band: :cooool: :bounce:

Why is this any surprise? Foxes are related to wolves just as dogs are. :dubious:

Kinda cute, but when you take any animal out of the wild for essentially slavery to a human, you should ask yourself, is this really a good thing?

Oh wait, this isn't a debate thread for the morality of domestication. Perhaps we should have one? :)

The animals specifically bred for domestication appear to be happy...so long as their needs our met and their owner isn't Paris Hilton.

Foxes would be great pets. If they misbehavied you could make a coat out of them.

Kidding of course.

Seriously, foxes are cute. I'd rather have a pet panda though!

yes; if conditions are which the animals are kept in, even fi thier destiny is to be food, it seems the animals themselves are perfectlly happy under such conditions

I think the red ones are cuter we need some of them.

Like Paris Hilton needs anymore pets .

I saw a mention of those foxes in a book or magazine article a whiile back. They're adorable. And it really is fascinating from a scientific standpoint to see how many traits of appearance -- things that people always just sort of assumed must have been specifically selected for -- turn out to be so linked to "tameness" that they just come right along with it in new generations. Things like floppy ears, and spots, and shorter legs.

Wouldn't this be extremely bad news for fox hunters? If foxes become popular pets, I can't see people accepting the hunting of their pets.

I know I sure couldn't watch people hunt something that looks like my pet.
