Ok settings:

Monarch, Pangea, Normal amt of civs, Marathon.

I am Ceasar, I've never used Praes before (I usually pick civs based on traits not UU).

Anyways everything was going great. I stole a worker for Izzy, built 3 cities. Hooked up iron, copper, and marble. Built the Oracle, used it to get Metal Casting. Through forges in all my cities, started pumping out CR1 Praes and some axes in all 3 cities. Each city is pumping one out in 5 to 6 turns.

Alexander declares war on me, even though he is on the complete other side of the continent. He sends a few units at me, archers and chariots, I slaughter them without a single casualty. I debate whether I want to send a few units over there to pillage or raze a city or two. I decide against it, I'd rather make peace and then go after my real close target Izzy.

And then at 200BC I see "Taoism is founded in a distant land"...OMFG How in the world can you get philosophy that early? I guess its not too hard, if you beelined to it through Writing/Alphabet/Drama. But still its 4k beakers at 200BC.

To add some perspective to this, I am researching Alphabet right now. And I have 50 turns to go.

And I am also currently working 6 Flood Plain hamlets. So something is weird here.

Could the AI have popped a goodie hut and gotten a philosophy a bit early?

Ofcouse it is a Greate scientist :)
It is actially relativelly later, if you beeline to it properly one can get Thaoism 1000 years early.

IIRC, goodie huts don't give religion-founding techs. An AI could have gotten prerequisites from goodie huts and then researched the tech, but couldn't have gotten it directly from a hut.

You may well be correct. I can't recall ever receiving a religion-founding tech now that I think about it. I can recall getting techs that were way ahead of the curve though.

I think the GP rushing the tech makes more sense than my suggestion.

Yeah I am sure he burned a few great prophets to get there. I wouldn't be surprised if he goody hutted writing. Researched alphabet. Burned prophets/did a little bit a research on the drama and philosophy. Even still I couldn't believe it.

I have actually popped philosophy from a goody hut 'once' and was quite surprised.

yes, but was taoism found allready.?

Those claiming to have popped religion techs from huts must either have done it before the first patch to the game or in a mod. The XML contains a list of techs available from huts, and no religion-founding techs are in the lists.

It is not possible to found a religion out of a hut in current-patched vanilla civ.

well i dont know how the AI does that sometimes. i was playing at noble and was the most advanced nation at the begining after picking up a couple of techs from huts and getting the oracle. then a lil later after ive met everyone i find that 2 of them are now 6 techs or more ahead of me. a lil later and two of the ones behind me have caught and passed me. ive just traded for guilds so i can upgrade to knights, and have just started making cats, macemen and pikemen when china declares war. im not worried ive got a good size army. hey lands with cav, canon and grenadiers. hmmmmmmm ok this is really bad. i survive his attack and continue on. later as i have just made my first ironclad i get a message telling me that china has just completed the manhattan project. i go into world builder to check him out i find that he is currently researching future tech and so is spain. they have finished ever wonder. well i ended that game as it was rediculously out of balance. oh and my research was never below 80%

They trade.

Each one works on a single tech. When they get it, they all trade each individual tech to each other so it is akin to discovering multiple techs for each one of them in the "trading club." If you have six civs working together they can catch up lightening quick.

In my case I didn't found the religion when the hut popped philosophy, now that I think about it, but it was "definitely" after the first patch, in fact I think it was after the last patch too and I wasn't playing a mod then either (I very rarely play them anyway).
