With so many Hitler leaderheads, I think we should have custom music for him. Hence the Horst Wessel Lied, the national anthem of Nazi Germany. I'd like it to be in Early, Middle and Late versions.

I've thought about it... I actually have both original recordings of it from the 1930s and a new high-def modern recreation of it as well.

Thing is... probably somewhat controversial, so I haven't implemented it in my mod.

Ain't Hitler contrversial, too?

Surprisingly, nobody has ever said anything about it in my mod.

To be honest, my main reason for NOT implementing the Horst Wessel Leid is strictly vocal... or the lack-thereof of vocals in any other theme music... no other nation in Civ4 has voices in its theme music, so I thought it might be odd to add one just for Hitler.

Celts?

If you want a non-vocal version I'd just use the regular Deutschland uber Alles theme. Isn't it the same tune as the Nazi anthem, just with different lyrics?

I dunno... for some strange reason I never get the Celts in any of my games... not by design... just seems to happen that way... so I'm not familiar with their music.

It's not. The melody is different.

You mean Wikipedia lied to me?! :sarcasm:

What I meant was, the first stanza is the same, isn't it? At least, the one in WW2 1939 sounds exactly like the modern German anthem, and I think it's just the first part of the Nazi anthem. So why not use the "less controversial" portion?

Wikipedia lies a lot...

Nothing bugs me more then people referring to wiki as the bible of fact. It's an aid, it's handy, and it's easy... but to rely on it as fact without double checking multiple resources is a mistake that too many people make.

Actually, the Wikipedia says that it's not the same song.

What happened was that the German national anthem actually incorporated both songs. So you'd have "Deutschland Über Alles" followed by "Die Fahne Hoch".

Today's German anthem is, in fact, the third verse of "Deutschland Über Alles".

Taken in whole, the two are obviously not the same song. The Nazi anthem replaced part of the original with Horst Wessel Lied, which is what you requested. What I suggested, which may have been missed in our Wikipedia digression, was that you might use the common part of both anthems. This is probably easier to find in late, middle and early versions. :)

Gaius -- just so it's straight, the lyrics of the Deutschelandlied were actually from a poem written by Hoffman von Fallersleben (the melody itself was by Josef Haydn, and was more associated with Austria rather than Germany when written.) After the war, the first two stanzas were dropped (not least of which because the first verse mentioned areas -- such as Memel -- that were not part of Germany anymore after the postwar rearrangement of borders.)

For musicians and the curious, here is the music with all three verses included:

That's not the full truth.
After the war, all three stanzas were part of the national anthem. But the chancellor and the president decided to play only the third stanza at official occasions.
After the reunification at 1990 the chancellor and the president discussed again and decided to drop the first two stanzas.
