Has anyone had any experience hosting a Civ3PTW game that both players on a LAN and players over the internet can join? Is this even possible without resorting to something like a VPN? What would I have to do to my router in terms of port forwarding or DMZ hosts?

thanks for any help

Dan

I've tried to do this many times... I can sometimes start it but it always ends up dropping someone within a turn or two. I can't remember where... but I remember reading something about not being able to play with players on your LAN and internet at the same time... something to do with ports and forwarding on the router? If anyone else got this to work... I'd love to hear about it too!

if anyone got normal muliplayer to work properly, i would be glad to hear about that :>.

I have gotten internet players to join a lan game.
network topology: Cable modem to linksysy router to pc.
If your router has a demilitarized zone, (dmz) enable it. (will not work behing a firewall, unless you open ALL required ports.
Host up your local lan game, and have your remote player access your game through the direct connect option. (they must know your ip address, try http://www.whatismyip.com/)
please note: the address of your computer on your lan, and your internet ip will probably be different. Local players can connect via normal lan options.
Hope this helps.
please install the current patch

Update.
I have recently tried the above method, with some interesting results.
I am dubbing them "either or syndrome".
I hosted a Lan game with myself in the DMZ as I described above.
Two remote people then joined. (on separate broadband accounts)
Then, when someone tried to join locally, the remote ppl were booted, and received a message saying that the host had cancelled the game.
The remote people said (by phone) that when they tried to join, it was as if the game did not exist.
I wonder why The remote players were booted when the locals joined.
If anyone figures this out, I'm sure there is some money to be made.
