I play on the monarch level. I'm usually an aggressive player but I like to wait for the AI to attack me so that my reputation stays intact. To the best of my knowledge, my reputation is often perfect at the end of the game.

I've noticed that if the AI attacks me and I manage to win the war in a big way but don't completely destroy the AI nation, the AI will continue to hate me to the end of time. This, despite frequent gifts of gold and tech after peace is declared.

I'm wondering what factors contribute to whether or not the enemy continues to hate me after peace is declared. The obvious one is the # of cities captured. Another could be whether or not the enemy capitol is captured. Any other ideas?

I should mention I don't ever raze enemy cities.

I've seen this too. I think they get in a tizzy over your bathtub being full of their sons' blood.

Really, tho, I imagine they continue to hate because they view you as being unfair - in terms of what has changed hands. You've made fair trade deals, but you also gained ten cities and 8 workers. Because of the extreme inbalance, they dislike you. After all, the AI will only consider 1s and 0s, not context. That they started the war is irrelevant, that you decided not to exterminate them too - only that you now have much more than they do, at their expense. Perhaps a gift of 12,000 gold would warm them up? I've never bothered to test that idea, of course. :p

Just an idea...

I remember hearing from one of the Firaxis guys that if you capture their workers and keep using them as slaves, it damages relations. But if you trade them back, disband them, or build them into a city the effect will stop (but I don't think they said anything about reversing its effect).

Some ("Some") people were complaining here about the lack of realism in CIV3...

This has to do with realism. Let me tell you a tale:

There is a little country in the center of Southamerica that 132 years ago faced three enemies at the same time: its three neighbours. It was a big war, comparable to the American Civil War, that obviously concluded with this small country defeated, decimated (only 10% of the initial population survived the conflict), and its territory cut apart.

Now ask me if there are some strong feelings among the inhabitants of that small country against who they feel was the country responsible for the conflict (Argentina, in this case)... BINGO!!!, you guessed well.

Now, ask yourself if some AI could forget beeing decimated, their cities robbed and at the same time engorssing your assets, population slaved or shot.

I don't think so. From my point of view, behaviour of AI regarding this issue is very realistic and almost represents human behaviour.

Or do you react different when the AI takes 75% of your cities and smashes yor civ into pieces? I can bet you swore revenge for the rest of history...

Happy civing!
