hot seat difficulties

I just got the game, and when I tried to play hot seat multiplayer with my brothers it kind of worked, save one problem.

It forces me to have someone playing as each team. Because I have three players, that means even if I did have people play as two teams each, its still imbalanced.

This continued even when I closed the fourth and fifth player slots, even when I switched them to AI. Am I doing something wrong, or do I need to find two more people to live in my house for me to play fairly.

assign the three of you different team numbers, such as 1, 2 and 3.

When I play Civ 4 in hotseat with 2 players only one player can give his tech to the other & not the other way around.
Somebody know how you can give technology in both directions?
