I was playing a hot seat game recently - I was the Carthaginians and my friend was the Spanish, we were on Emperor level using Europe, 7 civs, with fixed starting locales, and had decided from the start we would treat each others' civilizations amicably, trading techs and developing trade routes etc, so whenever we encountered each other we would generally set the tone of negotiation to 'worshipful' in order to make the diplomacy run smoother. (although we never could form an alliance, our diplomats were snobby, no matter how hard we tried to make them be nicer).

Well, my civilization sent an explorer into the Fertile Crescent and met the Babylonians, run by the AI, I gave them a bunch of techs to get the up to worshipful, formed an alliance, and got their maps and a small gift, and that was all I really wanted from them. In the single player game, even a civilization that is allied with you, will revert to 'unccoperative' on the turn right after it was worshipful, it never fails. However, in this game, the Babylonians remained worshipful every time I contacted them and continued to give me gifts every time I asked. This didn't apply to other civs I ran into later, just them - has anyone else experienced such a thing?

I usually start far from the other player in hotseat because I will most likely go to war with any civ nearby.

Yes I did experienced that also, but not in hotseat (just normal AI game). And I kind of remember it was also with a green-couloured civ : it stayed worshipful with my civ a very long time even when I asked for gifts. Of course, by the end I had to crush it so I sneak-attacked and lost my credit, but I found it really annoyingly loyal to me ! Maybe this non-betrayal behaviour has to do with the civ's colour (i.e. its nature)...

The Babylonians are usually Civilized Perfectionist. For those who don't know what that is, it means that they try to keep peace and doesn't want to expand (they irrigate the land instead). For anyone who wants to check which civ is what profile, you could either check in rules.txt or open an embassy and click on "Check Intelligence" on the Foreign Advisor screen. That's probably why they want to keep peace all the time.

The same thing occured to me with the Babylonians. I remember they gave me money at each turn!

On the rare occasion that I can manage to form an alliance, the other party just leeches off of me. As long as I continue to meet their demands things stay kosher. But, as soon as I deny them a tech or ask for a favor in return, they almost always "cancel this worthless alliance". In fact, don't think that I've ever been part of an alliance that was beneficial to me.

The perfectionist Civ are the easiest to kill for me, its the aggressors that give me somewhat of a challenge.

Sadly the more civilized nations don't tend to be much trouble to conquer, if you're into that. Myself I try to ally with them and help defend them, but they generally snub me off further or later in either case. On the lower difficulties of course you can ally to the right and the left and live of your allies, but not on any higher difficulty. My alliances on Emperor and such difficulties tend to last about maximum 10 turns, and never to any real benefit for me...
