How big can your cities get??

Last night I dreamed that I somehow acquired (probably through bribery) a whole slew of English AI cities that had populations of like 168. I remember lamenting, "it's gonna take forEVer to disband these cities!!"

But I guess dreams don't count.

I love mentally sick dreams (as long as they're not nightmares:cry: ), but I've never dreamt of civ as I can remember.

hm...
the only obstacle is the 3-caravans-limit ;) (except for the hard-coded limit :( )

A Civ-dream sounds like something you'd have during a fever: a confused, problematic dream, with a sense of a complex task, and endlessly frustrating!

My girlfriend once complained that I'd been talking about a "dictatorship strategy" in my sleep.

Was that city entirely stable in population or did it flip 42/43? Of course if you have wltkd then it flips every go doesn´t it? Highest natural I had was 42 but that was fairly regularly I prefer to have maybe as many as ten BIG cities: 35+ and then ´war´cities. The biggies sit there producing sci+cash+wonders+big military things like nukes(which I then reassign to a smaller city) whilst the smaller, generally products of violent and bl**dy conquest, produce heaps of whichever mobile unit is current. Also act as buffer for BIG cities. Even on higher difficulties you can make the AI pay dearly if you ever mess the diplomacy enough to allow him to attack you of course. ;)

I believe the max size you can reach without food caravans is size 46. You need 4 specials that can generate 6 food as farmland. Musk Ox, Oasis, and Wheat are the only ones. The only real problem is finding such a city site. I have been playing civ2 since it was published and I have never seen that combination appearing naturally. In fact, I cannot remember ever seeing any three of them in one city. Of course it doesn't matter since we are talking theoretical natural size.

I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so I have 40+ cities all the time.

Getting to size 46 isn't all that special either. All you need is a city site with 4 specials (or Grassland where the resources should be). These specials can be Oasis, Game, or any resource of the 2nd kind (i.e. Desert Oil, Wheat, Silk, Wine, Iron, Furs, Glacier Oil, Spice or Fruit). Oasis, Game and Wheat provide 6 food with Farmland, the others can all be transformed to Wheat.

Well sometimes i get all my citys to make food caravans to send to my capital and i can get it real big, with billion of people in it

I don't think you can "farm" game: if you try, you will convert it to buffalo, which will get you only 3 food with farmland.

My "Rome" in one game (Earth Map) has reached size 46, with caravans. It'll take a lot more to reach my target size of 100 though. I have enough cities to do it, however.

Rome on an Earth map would obviously have a number of sea squares. As an extension of this thread's topic: how big can a city on a one-tile island get? I don't think I've ever deliberately tried to maximize one.

The total max is ~127, which is about 80 million inhabitants. A one-square island city can get up to 22 naturally I think. 4f + 20*2f = 44 foods = 22 citizens.

If it had 4 Fish specials, and you add a Harbor, you would have 8 extra Food for 26 citizens.

I would change the Musk Ox to Oasis (for food; change to buffalo for shields) -- the Musk Ox is second best & should be changed, if engineers are available.
