How big is the "City Square" in Civ 5?

As the title states... How big is the hex "city square" in Civ 5? I know it can no longer be a cross. How far out can my city work the tiles?

3 tiles in all directions can be worked, once owned by your culture.

Culture bombing is no different, it just gives you access to tiles your cities havent currently claimed. But yes, it can extend beyond the workable tiles from the city, and it can also extend beyond the maximum 5 tiles a city can possibly claim.
