How buggy is multiplayer?

I am considering buying Civ 5 on steam sale, well there is also Civ 4 and Civ 6 to choose from. But Civ 4 doesn't run on Linux unlike 5,(not completely no sale, but makes a big difference for me) and reviews for Civ 6 are harsh.

But as is my method, even with overwhelming positive reviews on steam, I still look at the negative reviews to see if there is anything I should be aware of and investigate. And multiple negative reviews say civ 5 multiplayer doesn't work at all. Not only on Steam, but this issue was mentioned in amazon reviews too. I could see the game getting lots of positive reviews from single player playing from people who don't care about multiplayer.

Multiplayer is a broken mess, if you plan on buying for multiplayer just keep your money.

Single player and mods are good, it's a solid game, but if you have as many hours as I have on it, multiplayer keeps it fresh. Well multiplayer is completely broken as of 12/13/2017 and has been since about 2014. If you are considering buying this game for multiplayer please just save your money, it's a waste and it will only leave you frustrated. 2k and Firaxis refuse to even aknowledge that multiplayer is a broken mess. You can't get past 2 turns without a resync error, having to reload in EVERY.SINGLE.TURN. I can't even recommend this game since the developers refuse to fix the multiplayer, which by the way was working fine until the 2014 patch. On the forums they only correct people and go hard♥♥♥♥♥mode on anyone pointing out flaws with the game, they never aknowledge multiplayer is broken and just ask for logs without even reading them. If they read logs they would have had this fixed WAY before now.

I love the idea of simultaneous turns. Having to tape ones fingers waiting for another persons turn is boring. But only if it actually works of course. I see it works for some people, but is there something to this negative review? Only problem is that most on the forum will have had at least some success else why would they be here. Unless its all for that mail in turn thing, which the simultaneous turn thing sounds much more interesting. But maybe they have heard and know some of those who haven't had success with getting multiplayer to work.

A couple other questions, Can you use simultaneous turns for single player? Is there no way to do individual turns for multiplayer?

I see this thread https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/how-to-activate-mods-to-multiplayer-games-on-linux.619961/ and wonder about that too.

Is there any isssues/incompatibility in multiplayer between platforms? Like can a Linux and Windows user play together in multi online? Can console and PC play together? Can steam and nonsteam play together? You might thing that is a silly question, but don't underestimate how much problems DRM can cause.

I know it's the holidays, but helpful responses before the 4th of Jan when the sale ends would be appreciated.

Currently MP does not work for me, see my thread in this section. We can not load a multiplayer savegame in 99% successfully (one ore more player can not move/end turn).
But it only seems to happen when we are 4 players. It works most often when we are only 2 or 3. I guess the more players, the higher the chances it does not work. And we have no clue why.
Another smaller issue is to join the gamelobby when loading a savegame. When I join as second, the other 2 players can not join (endless loading). As soon as I leave, they can join and when I join last, everything is fine.
Maybe those issues are related..

Beside these problems MP is fine.

Mods at Linux should work the same way like on windows I guess, see this thread:
