I am playing king for conquest, but I want to avoid using Fundy (I'm playing as the Americans; call me a purist).

How can I conduct war under Democracy? Esp:
(1) How to keep people happy with units in the field?
(2) How to avoid/mitigate anarchy when gov falls due to my Spy attacks, etc?
(3) Any secrets to minimize shields used by assault forces? I know Spies don't cost, but eveyone else...

Thanks.

An easy thing to do is build Shake's in a high sheild site then re-support your military units from that city before sending them abroad.
Or use 1 or 2 from each city. With JSB this is easy.

Try to goad them into war by insisting they remove troops if possible.
Don't engage in activities that may collapse your government unless:
a.It is the turn before an "oedo" year.
b.You have the Statue of Liberty.

Your collapse will only last 1 turn. You can also use this to overthrow your governement if the Senate interferes with your schemes.
Cycle thru your cities BEFORE hitting end turn. You'll need to hire elvi" to keep out of any disorder.Run food deficits if needed. It will only be for 1 turn.

You can try bribing enemy units for nons or better yet let the barbs have a city and bribe everything that comes out of it for non supported units. With Leos you can use them for a long time.

The UN supposedly lets you sneak attack 50% of the time but the higher the level the less this seems to be true.It can be handy for "time buying" ceasefires here and there.

As Smash said and also setting a luxury rate of 30-40% is mighty useful. As a democracy you can afford it.

As has been said, you adjust luxuries, and you don't send but a unit or two from any one city.
Having all your troops out of a city will cause big time riots.

You can fight the best war as a democracy. It just takes practice and patience.

The only thing I have to add to Smash's suggestions are (if you find yourself in the same situation later in the game), build the U.N. and either Women's Suffrage or the Cure for Cancer, or both.

if you refuse to withdraw your units, there is a small possibility that the goverment won´t fall.

As Smash said, bribe enemy units en masse. I don't really bother with bribing barbarians, as they rarely have anything worthwhile.
Democracy gives you a cahs and tech advantage; use it effectively.
Go for quality units; mechanise your whole force and use economy of effort; get the best results for least troops. Levy a few units from each city, depending on size. Some big towns can support a lot out before they go into disorder.
Use your spy corps effectively, and make sure you have UN, WS and ST ( Build in a production city, and use for Air Force or fleet)
Instead of taking out an enemy army in the field, find out the cities which support the most units and take them out, thus getting rid of the pesky troops.
AI frequently sends its troops out on pointless patrols and manouevers, rather than use them effectively. Use Stealth Fighters, Cruise Missiles, warships and Spies to deal with them.

War in Deomcracy is a nice interesting challenge, and I agree, it isn't always accurate for every Civ to go to Fundy.

Agree with all of this. Another hint is to remember that units only cause unrest when out of a city. So concentrate on taking one or a few cities in a turn so that as many of your units as possible will be able to end their turns in the captured city. For this, and other reasons, democratic wars are best fought in the end game when you have most technology, and the other civs' cities are pretty well developed (esp with railroads)

You can support quite a few missiles/bombers/combat vessels/unhappy units in a large Democratic city. After the 2nd or 3rd unit, however (assuming JSB and WS/police), a red dude will poke through, and the WLTPD will end. That's just fine in a large city, esp. if it is through growing already.

In some cities, you can sacrifice growth to field an unhappy army... remember, a courthouse will add a happy citizen. If you can't support all the units you attach to a city, you are not ready to wage a full war under democracy... so go Fundy or Commie (vet spies rule the world). Communism sometimes can't control huge cities without some help from luxuries (or lots of food and Elvis'), however.
