I know that this has been asked before, but I didn't really understand the answers. I don't know much about computers. :mischief:

Essentially Civ IV is a single-core game that requires a fast CPU. The AI needs to check each civ, city and units for next build orders. The more Civs, tiles and units you have the slower it will be. As an indication I have a Core i7 920 which scores 5,513, and it is still slow at times especially on complex or huge map mods like mine.

Update your RAM to 6 GB+
Get a good GPU - I use an AMD/ATI HD 4870 and it is fine.
Install a Windows 7 64-bit so the game gets a full 4 GB of RAM (if you are running BTS)
Later get a faster CPU if your motherboard supports an upgrade.

Set your GFX details to medium or low in the game options, and turn off all the animations and bells and whistles there. Doesn't help you much, but in my experience it can speed up the game a little on machines which just barely meet the games hardware requirements.
