I downloaded the canada mod and it's now a folder sitting on my desktop. I open Civ4 Warlords and BTS but no Canada mod when I select load a mod.
What's the next step to play it?

When you download a mod, it's typically in a zip/rar/other compressed file. What you need to do is download the file and extract it into this folder.(for windows) C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword\Mods
It should come up as a new folder inside the BtS mods folder. After you do that, start up BtS and select "advanced" from the main start menu. Among other things, there is an option to "load a mod". if the mod is in the right folder, it should come up as an option. select it and the mod will be loaded.
Hope this helps.

I've tried a billion times.
I open it with winzip and it says winzip wizard can't open the file because it does not appear to be a valid archive.
No files are found in the zip folders.
I just don't get it.

MAKE SURE TO CHECK THE FILE TYPE. THE BELOW INSTRUCTIONS ARE FOR
.zip FILES ONLY

When you click download, an option should pop up that asks whether you want to save or open the file. Chose the option to open it, and if it's a zip file, winzip should come up. I don't have the full version of winzip, so it says something like "agree" or "evaluation version", so click whatever applies. After this the actual winzip window comes up, there will be an option to "extract" it. From this point just follow the instructions from the previous post.

If it's another filetype or it still doesn't work, post the problem specifically, and post the link to the mod so that I can try downloading it to see if it has any problems

Downloading mods can be annoying, but after a couple of times, you'll get it.

Thanks for your help.
I ended up downloading WinRar and when I tried the mod again it went right in. Yippee, I founded Vancouver tonight!

Thought I'd give this a bump. I downloaded Fall from Heaven and Rise of Mankind. Installed both into my BtS Mod folder. Neither of them shows up as a choice in the Load Mod menu. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

crappy.
Are you sure they are BtS mods and not Warlords? In which case they need to be opened in the W mod folder and played with the Warlords cd. I think I remember Fall from Heaven being a Warlords mod.
I'm not an expert though.

Both Mods are the BtS versions. I am 99% sure I'm doing everything right. This is driving me nuts, as the FfH Mod that came with BtS is outstanding (if small), and I want to play these already!

I don't see any reason it shouldn't show up as long as its in its own folder in the right place. You could put a completely empty folder with any name in the mods folder and it would at the very least show up on the load a mod screen.

1. It has to be in its own folder under mods

2.Check the location. C/program files/firaxis games/civ4bts/mods

check this and post any further problems

After reading this I tried to download the FfH mod and got it in the right location and it shows in the mods but whenever I try to play it I get a window saying Civilization BtS has encountered a problem and needs to close and then it closes.

@lil wilde
The intent of the previous post was to solve the problem of the mod not even appearing, which is pretty basic.

Did it crash on loading the mod or on starting a game?
Were there any error messages?

The first thing you should do is check what version of the game you have and what the mod is for. BtS v3.03, v3.13? If you haven't already, download the 3.13 patch. The only bad thing is that some mods aren't compatible. So make sure you downloaded FfH for whatever version of BtS you may have.

@Reconquest: Did post 9 solve the problem?

I'm downloading 3.13 now. I'm pretty sure I was updated to 3.14 actually but just to be sure...

I wanted to ask though, the difference between mods and scenarios as I understand it is that with mods you play the usual game with modifications to the units, cities, buildings etc. I played the Canada mod and that was the case.
For scenarios there are modifications but there is also a goal which is set for you, a "scenario" to play.
Am I correct here?

So the FfH scenario required forging the sword and defeating Mulcarn. When an if I get the FfH mod will it be the FfH style units and buildings but I will have free reign to do what I want?

Thanks!

A scenario is the actual map/game that you can play. Ex: you can play the earth 18 scenario, which is a preset map.

A mod is basically any change to the game. Typically "mods" make changes to the actual gameplay, while allowing you to play a normal game. Some mods also include scenarios, such as FfH. The FfH mod makes many gameplay chnges. I don't know the specifics, as I have yet to play it (I like playing realism mods).

Note: The FfH scenarios DO NOT WORK WITHOUT THE MOD. If the scenario you're playing is more than just a map and it has different victories and options, those are coded for in the mod. YOU CAN'T PLAY THE FfH SCENARIOS WITHOUT THE FULL MOD. (I don't fully understand your problem, but that might be it. If not, tell me what exactly you want to do).
