in the assests/sounds folder located in the directory, all of the songs files are in .ogg format, not mp3. in civ 4 it was as easy as accessing the folder, and clicking on the files to have them open in wmp. so how do i open them, i want to save them to my ipod...

Get some advanced music player. The ogg format is quite popular: it has better quality than mp3 (for the same bitrate) and it is an open format. Discover it! :)

VLC Media Player is a nice, free option for playing ogg. IIRC there's also a plug-in for Windows Media Player than adds ogg support. If you want to put them on iPod, you'll have to convert them to mp3 first.
