I signed a peace treaty for 20 turns, and after 20 turns were
up, they requested another peace treaty.

When I try to avoid another one the military advisors says its going to be war if I dont sign ?

Cheers

Well if you dont have a peace treaty with that nation you are at war - that makes sense to me

but smetimes if you are a dominent power you can ask for a peace treaty every 20 turns and ask for something with it e.g. gold maps

but only if you go to the adisor, contact the other guy and ask to re-negotiate. if he comes up, he'll want peace for peace straight. so remember to check every turn!

hmm... this is interesting. So if you get on with the second peace treaty, you'll get a reputation hit if you attack that civ right after? You will then have to time every attack to begin at the end of the treaty. That's quite difficult to do. if you're still not in position by that time - you'll have to wait another 20 turns to attack him just to preserve ur rep. this game is more tedious than i thought it was.

no murewa, once it is straight peace it simply runs on. So if you declare war then honorably it doesn't matter if it is turn 21 or 32 or 40....

you only have the 20 turns after you sign the treaty where you can't go to war. which is fair. the weaker civ is purchasing peace from you. If you get paid 500 cash on the proviso that you don't attack for 20 turns, of course it's a rep hit if you break it. (good when you're on other side of this situation).

Unfortunately there isn't a state where you aren't at war, but can raid and pillage and stuff. But yeah, it's either war or peace. no peace treaty means war.

ive had people though coming back 20 turns after the war just checkin that they i wanted to keep the peace treaty going

but it's not compulsory is it that the other civ has to check back with you when the treaty ends?

But if they ask to renew the peace treaty and you refuse, then you are automatically at war. That doesn't seem right.

You dont have to renew the treaty with liek the gold or everything - you cna just have a straight treaty - of course they could be unwilling to sign this.

If you dont have a peace treaty you must be at war (if you've met them) makes sense to me

you sure of this? when the first contact between you and another civs take place (territory maps trade) they don't ask for peace negotiations. peace treaties only come after a war. instead they should brand civs you have no peace treaties with as neutral.

but maybe the programmers just forgot to say that the first contact always give off an automatic peace treaty that can be broken(huh?) anytime with no rep hits taken.

there are three diplomatic situations: war, peace and mpp. makes sense to me. :-)

mpp isn't a situation, as the peace treaty still is in effect. it's just an additional agreement, like the ROP and military alliance and trade embargo.

I think they only come back with a straight treaty if the one you made before had conditions of gold per turn or resource of some description. The others are a once off payment anyway.

murewa,

When you contact a civ for the first time, you have done nothing to offend them harshly, so you are at peace. If you end a war, and get the 20 turn peace treaty, then that is the purchase of peace from the aggressor.

For example: You are the dominant cov, and CIVA is the lesser civ. You just had a war in which you took say, 40% of their terrain. They ask for peace. Unless you are an idiot, you should be getting something out of the treaty, ie gpt, gold, maps, cities, etc. They are giving you these items in exchange for 20 turns of peace. After that, you can declare war again without a rep hit because you are not obligated to stay peaceful with them. It's not all that confusing when you get used to it :)
