How do i...

...And if you haven't found them, build Marco Polo's Embassy (or United Nations) and do the same thing (press F3 and choose them from the list)

Who'd wanna talk to the AI... they're mean they threaten me and then beat me if I refuse to give them my best technology... meanies :(  :king:

You talk to trade techs, demand tribute, ask for gifts, and sometimes to exchange maps. They are like North Korea - demanding, bullying, insulting, but little creativity and easy to beat.

Why aren you asking this here when the answer is clearly in the manual that comes along with the CD?

Back when I used to play Civ2 (of course, then it was always on chieftain. I played warlord, but stopped because war elephants kept stealing my units! ) I was always in the tech lead, or at tech parity. Although, I was mainly a builder (with antiquity wars), and if my reputation were bad, I'd just wait X number of turns.)

i agree. when you demand tribute they bore me with some speech about being insulted for the last time. then they declare war on me.

oh yeah i forgot. however, as you may recall from my thread- whats the big deal with rep. , i dont do governments where i am not in complete control

The "governments where you are not in complete control", ie. "representative" governments, give you an extra Trade arrow for every worked tile with at least one trade already. They also allow you to use WeLoveThe(Consul/President)Day to rapidly increase the size of your cities, assuming you have enough food and Luxuries. These extras mean vastly more citizens, production, gold, and trade bonuses. They demand vigilance on citizen unhappiness and special tricks when you want to go to war, if you do not want to change governments. But a Power Democracy will blow away (or bribe away) all other governments. And it cannot be bribed...

That's not rather like US ? :p :p :p

Actually i'd say that the AI is a lot like real world France, all you have to do is to take a city or two and theyll come running to the negotiations table...
;)

I assume you are referring to WW2- the Germans never actually "took" Paris...

When I started with Civ I felt the Diplomacy part of the game was overly insulting, but as I read the recent declarations of North Korea (and China during the P-3 shootdown) I think I know who Sid patterned the AI negotiations code after. Remember Nikita pounding his shoe on the lecturn at the UN and shouting "We will bury you!"?
