How do you begin a game with historically accurate starting locations?

I'm searching through the forum, and I can't find a good answer. I'd check with the official website, but it seems to be down.

I heard that one of the patches to the game was supposed to make this possible. It's the thing I miss most from Civ2 - I liked the real-world feel. So does anyone know how to go about turning this option on? I've downloaded all the patches. Please help!

You use the editor!

Alot of the modifications provide accurate starting positions.

Do look out for the next version of my mod if you are really interested in playing on an excellent worldmap with accurate starting positions and resource positions and much more :p

I was afraid that might be the answer. Is it possible to give me a quick run down on how to go about doing that? I've never used the editor before, so I have no idea how to proceed - what steps do I need to take in order to make starting locations historically accurate?

I hope you will be able to hack to give bombers (esp. stealth) a more realistic range than the ridiculous '8' we are limited to. A real problem on a World Map.

As for the original question, I think it is map/select brush type/overlay and choose player starting location from the drop down menu. As I recall. Anyone want to help?

Download the Earth map you want to use from here (or use the one Firaxis provides, if you like inaccurate geography and ludicrous resource allocations <g>).<p>
Fire up the 1.29f editor. Load the map file you want to use. Scroll around the map and spot all the various starting locations. At each location, change the ownership of the tile to the civ that should start there by right-clicking on the tile and selecting "Reassign". In the dialog that comes up, select the third radio button and pick the civilization you want from the corresponding dropdown. When you've got everything fixed up, save the map, load Civ3 and select "play scenario". Load the map file you created, pick your civ, and decide who your victims will be, and go to town.<p>
Hope this was helpful.
