How do you deal with anarchy?

6-7 turns of anarchy can really mess up your civ's progress. Has anyone got any great tips on minimising the impact of anarchy?

Thanks JC, I had seen that other thread, but i am more interested in how people deal with the effects of anarchy rather than how long it takes.

Is there anything that people do to prepare for the onset of anarchy? Is there anything that can be done? To minimise unhappiness, starvation, enemies attacking, loss of production and income?

btw - I made a real dumb mistake in an early game - I switched governments (from Monarchy to Democracy) in the middle of my Civ's golden age. 7 turns of anarchy - what a waste!

Play a religious civ. My goodness, it makes a huge difference. no anarchy, temples at half cost, plus expansionistic if you are iruquois, just tonight I went from not being able to keep up on Regent to being able to outgrow the AI.

I think planning is key. Do not enter anarchy if you are being routinely threatened by a neighbor, build up your military first. This is really the most important. You just have to get over the 5 -8 turns of non-productivity, and not too many people should starve. Religious civs rock!

Couple things I do:

1) Set your city governors to "emphasize food" on all your cities.
2) Let all cities that don't have any improvements go into civil disorder; who cares.
3) Make last-minute hurries to beef up your culture and defense. Be sure and wait one turn so they actually complete first.
4) War weariness does NOT reset when you go into anarchy. You can't overthrow democracy and institute...democracy...and expect to reset your war weariness. Doesn't work.

Yeah, religous civs rock!! Only one turn...don't go into anarchy especially when you have wonders building...I have often found myself losing wonders by a mere 1-6 turns!!

I don't deal with anarchy. I use the religous civs. Anarchy would just drive me nuts. It is too huge to lose all those turns from switching governments.

Actually i was fighting a war with 5 of my neighbors when my civ is in Anarchy....

quite interesting how Anarchy ve no effects on the newly conquored cities, the army's loyalty etc.. I am actually quite proud/annoyed to see my cities celebrating for Anarchy, while 1/2 my empire is starving, conquoring etc.

I like it how the Military Advisor calls me, "Revolutionary" hehe

I choose to switch while in war-- of course if you have no war, this is hard to do.
Made sure my cities were productive, especially on food.
Bumped luxury spending to 80%, science to 10 -- nothing gets researched in anarchy anyway.
It ran 8 turns... but no harm. War went on apace, most cities had 'we love the revolutionalry' days the whole time.
People loved me, and extended my palace...

Yeah. I have had the people add to my palace during anarchy too. I guess they were REALLY sick of the old government.

Once again yes religious civs rock and fighting a war during anarchy is about the only way to progress in any area during anarchy, but I would caution against it at levels where the AI is making frequent counter attacks (especially the computers new tactic of actually landing troops well behind the front line). This can be disasterous especially if you have pissed off the computer enough that they just raze your cities (happened to me).

How do I deal with anarchy? I play a religious civ. In my current game I'm playing the Egyptians and this is the farthest I've made it on monarch level. I think I'm in the 1600's now.

Now, how do you eat a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup?

Endureth

I'm seriously considering only playng religious civs for this reason (actually, they're already pretty good because of the cheap temples / universities)
First, if I'm in a Wonder race I delay my rev'n until it's over. Also, I only call for the revolution just after I've discovered a tech, not in the middle of research.
Rushing improvements just before rev'n is especially beneficial when you can pop rush (despotism or communism). If you don't rush, production will be stagnant for (x) turns, whereas much of the population you spend will be made up while in anarchy. And since you don't get any commerce in anarchy anyway, it's a good time to take the pop and happiness loss.
Other than that, the main issues are timing and development/infrastructure....

How I've dealt with anarchy is to put luxuries to 100% (or as near as possible given cash situation) and tried to retain civil order in the cities:

1. It prevents rioting destroying improvements
2. I think it may shorten the period of anarchy if you empire has no disorder (troops, luxuries and entertainers).

It is awful when it goes on and on...it is an anti-golden age!

NOTE:
1. NEVER anarchy in your golden age unless you are a religious civ.
2. REMEMBER to correct your luxuries after the revolution...

I would think you are right about the lack of disorder shortening anarchy, but I don't think that is the way it works. Of course, I don't actually know exactly how it works, so I could be wrong.
