I am trucking along in my game right now. I actually have won by cultrual victory, but I want to keep going to see how hard combat become late in the game. I have two targets that I want to take. The Zulu and the English have a MPP and I want to take their civ's to task. I play as a Republic due to lower coruption, better science, and lower war weariness. I know that if I can get them to declare war on me I get a few truns free of ww but I canot seem to get them to take the bait. What are some ways that you have gotten civ's to declare war? By the way I know that a two front war is risky, but I have a stack of 25 artiliery, 35 tanks, 15 cavalry, 3 cavalry armies, 1 marine army, and 6 mech infantry ready to go, so I do not worry about a drag on troops. Also I could have about 50 more units at the front with in 10 turns along with about 20 workers to build RR to new cities. How can I get them to attack me so I am the defender? I got Babylon to declare war by planting a spy until they had enough, but I already have spies in both civ's.

Try using your spy. If the spy fails, and you don't get war, plant another one and try again.

Also, an easy way to get someone mad at you is to repeatedly offer a bad trade, or demand tribute. Just keep clicking the "will you accept this" button until their attitude changes. Then, when they are annoyed or furious, try your spy.

Yep. That's about the only thing Espionage is good for!

:)
Another method is to keep putting units in the area of thier control - you should keep getting asked to leave. Ignore them and eventually they should declare war on you.

May take a few turns though if they are polite to you.

Doesn't this technically count as you declaring war? I've never done it during peace because I thought I'd be seen as the aggressor. Can anyone clarify?

I just tried this. It causes you to be the starter of the war.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

When I place my unit in my enemy's territory (and he's furious) he says that the bloodshed of the war will be on my hands. Does this mean that it will be taken as ME starting the war?

This never works for me. I always end up having to move my troops or declar war

Hopefully I will get to play tonight. I am going to try a few differnt ploys to bait them into attcking. I will try to blow things up with my spy and I am going to send my troop wandering around their land. I will post my results when I do.

yes, when they say the blood will be on YOUR hands it does mean you instigated the war and therefore the blackmark goes on your reputation.

Update on getting someone to take the bait.
I was only able to play about 4 turns last night, but the results look promising:goodjob: On each turn I put two cavalry armies and two cavalry units next to one of his cities. When he told me to move them I also demanded his treasury. So, as of right now I have a pissed off Shaka, but no war. I do however think that I can goad him into one in another 4 turns. I am going to try making a few explorers and send them all over his land and see what that does.

On a side note. Is there an area where I can see what my rep is? I was negotiating a trade deal with the Russians and they said no due to my betrayal of the Persians. The only interaction that I had with them was a war alliance with them against the Babylonians, who I killed off. How could this be a betrayal of them?

Dropping spies on them works. It might take a pile of spies but u can drive some one from gracious to war with enough of them. Settling their territory makes u the cause as does leaving troops in their territory.

You did not read the fine print. The Persians were supposed to finish of the Babylonians, not you.

if you ask al the time for a city they will get mad and
mayby (i had that many times)they come into your terretory
and if you ask them to leave they declare war anfd your repitation is good:king:

and then you kill them all![punch] :rocket2: :ripper: :sniper: :alien: :skull: :soldier: :shotgun:

Had a recent experience using the MPP to get into a war with a friendly civ.

Was attacking Japanese, moving in on Kyoto which had Pyramids and Leonardo's. Indians (my "friends") got there first. Next turn I signed peace treaty with the Japanese, and threw in a MPP. Then the Indians attack the last Jap city, and presto! War between me and Indians. Three turns later Japs are gone, I now have Kyoto and those 2 Wonders.

I realize this scenario depended on a lot of circumstances going my way, but the point is the MPP can be a great route to war with no hurt to reputation. Can backfire, though....

Another possibility: you have a spy planted, so keep trying to "expose enemy spy" on civ you want war with. Maybe they'lll get annoyed to the point of declaring war, I dunno.

If you do not have any right to pass agreement with him, and he has any ships inside your border, try this...Demand anything fore free from him (cities, gold or something), and repeat it until he has become furious. Then demand him to redraw his ships out of your territory. Then he will declare war against you. It works fore me every time. :)

Actually in my last game, I managed to use propaganda successfully against three cities. It took 2 attempts against Abe's (Monarchy) Buffalo (size 4) at a cost of ~450 an attempt. It took 6 attempts against Mao's (Communist) Anayang (size 5) at a cost of ~150 an attempt. I got Shaka's (Anarchy) city (size 6) in one attempt at a cost of around 600. I was in Democracy, the culture leader, and playing at Emperor level. All the cities were candiates for flipping my way.

Espionage has got a bad rap IMNSHO.
