Hello, this might sound daft but I've just started playing Civ 2 and I've noticed that the game is laid out isometrically but my settlers only move up or down, so they can only go to half the squares, much as checkers can only move to a black square on a checkers board. I thought maybe this was the way things were supposed to be, til I noticed that my neighbours had irrigated lots of adjacent squares - ie the 'white' squares on a checkerboard. Am I missing something really obvious? How do I move to these squares?

Use the number pad. Keys 7,9,1,3 will move you diagonally. Don't use the four arrow keys, since 8,4,6,2 on the number pad do the same thing anyways.

It looks really obvious, but it never is to a new player: it took me a month in Civ 1 to discover how to use the number pad :)

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I am in a real jam now - I play on a laptop which doesn't have a number pad! Do you know if there's a way around this using the mouse, or can I reset the movement keys? Sorry to be such a pain!

You have 2 options.

Either use the mouse and click and hold down the left mouse key until the cursor says "go" then release and it will move there for you.

I used that until I found how to enable the number pad on my laptop. I had to hold down the SHIFT key and press NumLock (Which was also the scroll lock key when SHIFT isn't pressed.) This made the keys I,O,P,K,L,:,M,<,> the number pad keys. It was tough to get used to because I was on an angle....but it works. :D

Hope this helps.

Note: You may notice some BLUE colored numbers on some of your keys.....these are the number pad keys for your laptop. If you don't have them...then you will have to use the mouse like I described above. Be carful with Triemes....I lost a lot using the mouse!!!

Locate "Home", "PageUp", "PageDown" and "End" keys.
Translates to UpLeft, UpRight, DownRight, DownLeft.
Takes a game or so to get used to, but then works like a dream.
Better than the blue (or green) keypad, which obscures other important keys.

Played Civ2 since 1996. Since 1998 on laptop only.

I played Civ1 on a laptop, since the home, end, pgup, pgdn keys were all in a coloumn (instead of the proper square), I had to learn which was which... once I learnt was easy tho... Infact... Now when I play Civ2 on a normal keysboard I still use the combo of arrow keys with home, end, pgup, pgdn.... habbit I guess, but it's lasted the 4 years since I last used that old laptop.
