I still only play the Vanilla version, I even bought the complete collection on ebay recently, but still haven't installed it.
I always play Huge maps, with 11 Civs and random personalities. I tried epic speed, but I still think I prefer Normal. I like Terra maps, but they are pretty predictable, so I usually play Continents or PerfectWorld2 (which I have modified so that the Huge maps are the same size as the default Huge maps, I found the PerfectWorld2 default maps had too much space in them and so rarely cause any conflicts. I also play on Noble, which I can usually win on or finish near the top at least, but still can have a hard time of it... even got wiped out recently.
And perhaps unusually, I don't normally play it as a game to win, but rather more as a sandbox experience like Sim City. I just enjoy building up a nice and fruitful civilisation. I've occasionally crippled my economy to win a space race, or declared war on an old friend just to get that extra 1% of land area to win a domination game. But generally things like that tend to shatter the illusion a little for me, and I'd rather finish 2nd or 3rd realistically than do something that no country would ever really do just in order to win the game.
Oh and I'd quite like to know more about the wife/girlfriend situation too, and how you manage to keep them both entertained while just playing games in the background
