First of all hello all - first time poster that has played Civilization ever since it's conception 15 years ago. But back on topic:

I perfer to play the game in more of a roleplaying fashion than a conquest/war strategy game. For example I might not declare war on a nation to gain a tactical advantage if that action wouldn't fit in with how I am roleplaying the civilization. I will not trade with civilizations I don't like or have governments/religions that don't jive with mine. I will jump in a war to help an ally even if hurt me dearly. Does anyone else play this or play in a style different from the norm?

Hey you know what...
Civ 4 could be an awesome RPing game on multiplayer...
... You didnt hear anything ...

That is what I do. I am not a war-gamer, and I never play to win.

Unfortunately, you shall find that this forum is full of testosterone-pumped "warmongrels".

It does happen that I go to war occasionally, mostly when I fight with Tanks against mounted forces. But........I prefer to build and so on. I never ever have the Space race on though, hate that.
Although my style of play is someohow passive, I do attack the weaker brethern as an act of mercy.
Its a shame the game doesnt incluse a complete "anschluss" option. I could imagine that a weaker civ would go up in a stronger one without a war.
As it stands now with the one city cultural, dunno....

As a last comment, I think it has been 4x that I have finished a CivIII game (Rhys expansion was awesome). I like the building and the exploring more then the actual final victory.

i do play like you do mitra
;o)

having a little RPG behaviour makes the game deeper!
for exemple:
- i'm giving stuffs for free to an ally
- i'm not going to war if i'm not offended
etc...

First, welcome to CFF.
I hope you enjoy your day.

I trade with everybody if they let me.
I generally attack no one, unless attacked first.
I am peaceful and am often last on the military troop demographic.

Last game though I did attack the Aztecs to give me some room. :D
Also the Spanish because I didn't like them.

If I tried an all peace game it probably wouldn't be much different.

P.S. I noticed the 15 years part.
The Simpsons has been on that long also.
I wonder which was first.

I play in very much the same way actually. If the first nation I meet is friendly, I generally befriend them for the entire game. I'll not trade with heathen sob's either. I do play to win, though, but I take care of my allies as well. Usually if you start out with good relations, it doesn't take much to maintain them. Makes it more fun, really, to immerse yourself in another world for awhile.

I try and maintain an Ally throughout the game, but i have found its generally the first person i meet, and i end up having to conquer them in the end anyway, just to completely control one continent or whatever (i hate not having a dominant foothold in at least one area! lol).

And the RP element of games makes them much more fun, i tend to do that on all games. And im more comfortable on medium difficulties, i dont like the AI being too good :mischief:

I use the walk softly and carry a big stick method.

I am a builder and role player. I only go to war if I get attacked first, or when another civ plants a city in such a way as to cramp my borders.:D

But I don't let my military slip or stagnate. I build and update my units regularily. I aggressively explore and attempt to settle colonies as the opportunity arises.

One of the things I'm enjoying most about this game is that you can play it differently every time. My current game, I've made a solid, religion-aided alliance with Cyrus, and together we hate Louis, Peter, and recently-deceased Mao.

But, I decided not to start any more wars on them. I've got a huge tech lead and want to try to win the space race (I've never gotten that far -- I may have to "one more turn" past a time victory).

So, if they attack me, I'll squish them; if they don't, I'll beat 'em with technology.

Some other game, I'll be a warrior from start to finish. Try different styles and see what you like!

I was starting to wonder if I was the only person that played the game like SimCountry. Glad to know I'm not.

I play the game for enjoyment, not to "win". Especially since the easiest way to win is outright conquest and that's no fun.

Because honestly, no a normal sized map, if you did it fast and hard enough, you should be able to conquer the world as Rome during the classical age while Praetorians are still the best unit.
