How do you squease techs out of the AI?

I'm playing semi-deity for the first time and its almost impossible to keep up in the tech-race, even later in the game. Even though I have the largest population + area. A good thing is a had two smaller yet more advanced neighbours. So I attacked one of them and it took a lot of effort since he had infantry and my best attacker was cavalry. Since I was more than twice his size, I got his cities one by one until there was only a few left. Then for the first time he was willing to give me something better than a worker: one lousy tech. So he got his 20turn peace and I then I took the rest of his cities without being able to squease anything else out of him.

Then a started on my other neighbour but he wouldn't give me anything valuble, and he's almost extinct now! Is it anything I can do better to squease tech out of the AI? By the way, my rep is clean (I think, nobody greets me with "your betrayal of X is legendary").

Any advices?

maybe its the difficulty setting -on emperor I manage to get like 3-4 techs for peace sometimes

Steal the techs in that case. Why are you not able to hold your own in research? Are you in Rep with way too many units? Too much maint for structures?

Once I get to the size you are I only have trouble with tech race at Sid. They get such a discount and I need so many troops. I can more or less match them even then, but it is not worth the trouble, so I do no research and steal.

Extorting tech above emperor is not easy, often they will just go extinct rather than deal.

Well in emperor I usually never have problem to keep up in tech later in the game, especially when I'm the largest civ. I haven't had time to build universities and stockmarkets in all cities but in most I think. I have no unit-supportcost yet since Im playing commie, but maintainence is quite big. I tried to switch to Democracy but the tech-rate actually got lower because of the corrupction in the far cities. Not to mention the unit cost.

Razing towns rather than keeping them seems to work for me, but I've never tested it to say for sure. In general, the more damage you do to them (includes capturing/razing cities, killing units, capturing workers, pillaging tiles), the more they'll pay. Taking just one city from a civ that was down to two cities to begin with won't get you much, in other words.

capture cities.
wait until he waits to talk piece.
talk about peace and give gpt for tech in the peace talks.
Declare again same turn.

It has been awhile since I last played demi, but iirc it is not unike what I see at sid. In that case cature and talk peace and go back to war and repeat will not work.

First they will be very reticient to give up a tech, second they will not talk peace for a very long time after the first rape. In fact they may not talk peace again at all.

I cannot imagine they will sit still for you to do it a third time. That stuff worked in vanilla, but C3C at the higest levels is not common at all.

I have had them never dial me up after the second war and only take peace straight up, if I call them. It did not matter how much stronger I was. That is just my perspective.

I did this on deity (gotm37) probably 5 times in a row with roughly 5-8 turns in between the actions.

They dont need to be any happy with you at all. The ONLY requirement is that they talk to you.
Just set all sliders to tax. If needed turn all your people into tax men. Now you probably have like 1000 gpt. Maybe the first 200 is neaded for peace alone. leaves 800 for a tech. They will do that.

Thats my experience too. If you don't give them the 20 turns peace after a negociation they may refuse to talk to you at all no matter what you do. That happened to me a lot of times before a learned about reputation. Besides, it will be hard to make deals with others to.
