How do your reduce tech. advances?

I set the tech rate at 1000 thinking it would slow down, but it didn't even make a difference. Aside from setting the minimum rate higher, is there another way?

I like the minimum at tech rate 1 and the maximum at 100.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If that didn't help then put in filler techs that do nothing but HAVE to be researched...e.g

"Black Death"
"Dark Ages"
"Mongol/Hippo Invasion"
