How does the AI calculate reputation?

Has anyone figured this out? Specifically, if I want to attack an enemy civilization, how do I do so with the least amount of damage to my rep:

Have spy get caught which causes them to attack me?
Refuse to remove troops from land which causes me to declare war?
Declare war in negotiations?
Renegotiate Peace?

Is a sneak attack any worse than outright declaring war?

Also when you sign one of those 20 turn peace treaties, and they come at the end of those 20 turns, and you don't agree to renew the peace, is it the same as declaring war?

Didn't Civ2 have a menu that showed your reputation?-- Made life so much easier.

I usually remove all my troops from his territory and then I go to the diplomatic negotiations screen and declare war in a real formal way by pressing that bottom.

I am not sure if AI suffer reputation damage.
Never break a treaty and you would have a fine reputation.
Always cancel them through the diplomatic channel.

Has any one ever seen the AI breaking a right of passage agreement. They have never broken RoP with me.

If you are playing as the Human the AI will eventually attempt to screw you and blame you for something you NEVER did, or remember some minor thing that happned four thousand years earlier!

That crazy AI! :crazyeye:

Like Marshal said, go to the 'active' part of the diplomatic screen and cancel peace would be the best for your rep, unless you can get them to declare war on you.

If you cancel the peace treaty you will be viewed somewhat as a warmongerer, but you would not be viewed anywhere near as bad as someone who breaks treaties or sneak-attacks people.

If any of your units are in their territory it is considered as a sneak attack, even though your units are not immediately next to their city(ies).

If your spy gets caught, they declare war, so they get the rep hit.

If you tell them to remove their troops or declare war, and they do declare war, they get the rep hit. You would get the rep hit if they tell you to remove your troops or declare war and you declare war. The rep hit goes to whoever actually does the declaration of war.

If you do not renew the peace treaty it is considered as declaring war. Everytime you meet a civ a peace treaty is already in place, until it is canceled by one of you. No peace treaty = war.

If their are any per-turn deals going on when someone declares war, the person who declared war gets a rep hit, since they are breaking a deal.

To answer the one of the replies up above, i have had the Ai break a ROP against me. They used my railroads to zoom in and attack one of my poorly defended cities in the center of my empire and nearly took it with a tank. This was a complete sneak attack using a ROP by the Ai no less.
