Is it similar to Alpha Centauri where each civ has a number of votes based on population?

This may have already been answered; if so, could someone just direct me to the thread please?

One civ, one vote.

Kinda blows if you ask me.

The entire council system has been totally castrated compared to Alpha Centauri.

that sucks; the U.N. assembly was the best part of Alpha Centauri!

I agree 100%

Edit: They left out some of the better diplomatic options too. I especially liked how in Alpha centauri allowed you to reduce one faction to their knees and then get them to be your vassal the rest of the game.

That was very cool.

The UN vote is a very cool feature. Like real life, each country gets an equal vote (there are not enough civs to have a security council in the game). I had the best game of civ ever in a game where I was Egypt and I took a tech edge early. I shopped techs to the other civs (key tip: always ask them what they are willing to pay for everything, even if they ask you first) getting enough cash per turn and luxury deals that I could run my science at 100% for the first time ever. When Germany declared war on me, I got everyone else to go to war for me and boycott germany. I never fired a single shot, and was a "small" country that might not have been able to win the space race or culture score. So I convened the United Nations (on the same turn that England offed Germany) and was voted in 3 to 2. It was a happy moment, and fun to see that with the new options, YOU ARE NEVER OUT OF IT TILL YOU ARE OUT OF IT.

Sultan I agree that the UN vote is a cool idea, but if you haven't played SMAC(check one of the other boards here for more info), you probably don't realize that the way the game utilizes the feature is a HUGE step backward.

Keeping in mind of course that SMAC was produced by the same people.

The funny thing about gamers is that they want game features to evolve into something better than they were before ... and game designers sometimes can't even equal thier previous efforts (as evident from the way UN was implemented in civ3).

sorry to ramble but it is late...

I just won a UN vote, while I'll admit that it is pretty anti climatic, and I really like the world council options in SMAC, it is realistic.

People shouldn't complain about the unrealistic combat system (or any of the other unrealistic things.) and than say they want a population or power weighted UN vote.

In real life, each country no matter how insignificant gets 1 vote. (5 nations have veto power on the security council). The actually effectiveness of the UN is pretty minimal. Does anybody believe that our UN would launch a solar shade to prevent global warming and lower the sea levels? Certainly not before the game ends in 2050!

*Sigh* When will people ever learn that it is NOT a matter of realism or non-realism but about how much FUN the game could be.

Take this rather short-sighted comment. We complain about subs and what-not because those features aren't FUN. The sub sucks right now and doesn't get used very much (only use right now if for tac nukes but why use tac nukes when you can have ICBMs?)

And we are now saying we want a population wieghted UN WITH MORE OPTIONS because as you say, the UN is not fun at all. The solar shades/ genocide polices and so forth were part of a very attractive feature in SMAC. Why they took it out is a mystery.

With this game it is always 1 step forward 1 step back.

How does the UN vote work ?

I construct the United Nations great wonder.
Then at the end of the turn, a windows appears in order to "elec" for a leader.

But after that, I do not know how to make another vote: how do you open the UN vote ?

I guess you don't afterall, I don't know for sure. It looks pretty random as sometimes I get a lot of turns before another meeting and sometimes every turn there's a meeting.
I remember Master of Orion as there was a pre-requisite for the council meeting (2/3 of the galaxy colonized, I guess) and them the thing ocurred periodically, without a rule.
Judging for the lack of replies, most civers don't have the answer for this question, too.

Here is the deal; contradict me if you know better. If you build the UN it asks you every turn if you want to hold a vote. If you dont build the UN you are at the computer's mercy. I am not sure if being at war stops this.

That is exactly right. It happens each and every single turn. If you don't build the UN, you are totally 100% f*cked.

There has been some posting claiming that the U.N. in Civ3 is more similar to the real-life U.N., as each Civ gets 1 vote. But, what about the Security Council? If they keep this 1 civ - 1 vote in Civ3, they should give the top 3 or top 5 Civ's an advantage in that they can make some kind of veto ;)

That being said, I would much more appreciate the SMAC method; even without the other things you could bring up like raising water and double resources or whatever it was. Just for being able to vote for world leader based on population would be alot more fun.

This is the way it works (from personal experience):

When you build the UN, it asks you if would would like to hold the vote. If you say NO, it asks you again EVERY turn until you say YES. This gives you the ability to make some final repirations before voting begins.

When you say YES, the vote is held, and if there is no verdict, there is a time period before you are asked again. I'm not sure if this is random, or if there is a set "cool down" period. My guess is that it is a combo of the two, i.e a random number between 5 and 10 turns.

the damn question appears every single turn in my game,... and how do you win the vote? i find it difficult for everyone to vote for me and not someone else, any tips?

WTH... I'm with those who have built the friggin UN and the question appeared JUST ONCE! I'm in peace with everyone I have the largest population and the largest fn territory and 250 tanks in my arsenal so I could wipe the entire world 100 (virtual) years ago but I'm still waiting for the darn voting question to appear again because I want to watch the diplomatic victory.

Dont tell me its yet another bug in this game...
