I can't figure this out, when I switch from Despotism to Monarchy or Republic suddenly a bunch of units gets disbanded? Is there a advisor or report screen or something ingame that explains what is going on?

Is it because of anarchy?

Hmmmmm found answer I think just after posting..... armies eat food and governments change that. Was scouring the manuals and did not think to explore the ingame help.

Havent played this game for so long I forgot how different it is from the others..... somehow it's actually more difficult too if only because of all the extra micro managing and lack of comprehensive reporting.

Settlers eat food and units take production shields.

My mistake, admittedly my brain was not completely functioning yesterday.

So a niggle is you need to make sure your cities supporting lots of units have lots of shields before a change of government..... which is bad if a city supporting lots of units has no mines around it.

Revolutions can be dangerous, if i recall right, weirdly big despotic cities can get unlimited garrison happiness which goes away and needs to be replaced by luxury tax on republic. Usually monarchy is a good first tech, but if your tiles max out at 2/2/2 theres no point.

Usually you always try to get two bonus resources on your first cities to offset that, then on later cities quickly build improvements and buy buildings and have big cities send food caravans (when no wonders are important) and build settlers/engineers to join til 5 pop.

On the other hand democracy is good for counter espionage and corruption, bad for staying in wars - much like the forever war on reddit showed.
