How exactly does the God of War pantheon work?

I don't know if anyone tried the different variants yet, but here are a few questions about the mechanics of God of War:
- does it work if I win a battle near one of my puppets
- does it work if I "win" a battle (i.e., the battle was a 'minor win' or better), or do I have to kill the unit
- does it work also for cities themselves (i.e., if I kill a unit by bombarding with my city, or if my city gets attacked, but the attacker had odds of 'minor defeat' or worse)

You have to kill a unit to get some reward.

Yeah, now I have tried myself, and you really have to kill.

But at least the positive thing is that this works also with cities - i.e. killing the unit with a city also gives faith.

Update: I tested a bit more, and it turns out that this works also for puppets.
