I've been playing the game and wondering why my people had only started researching monotheism in the 100's AD and that I was still in the ancient ages. I only reached the middle ages at about 1000 AD, and during the 1900's I was only just begining to use gunpowder!

What should a general good player's eras begin and last?

Depends on the level.
In chieftain, it is quite likely you won't get to the modern age before 1950.
I've found that Regent is most likely to correspond to history.
Some Deity players have been able to get Gunpowder in BC and reach the Modern Age before 1000.

Depends on the map, too...

Can't really say, but Regent seems to imitate history best.

Wars slow down the tech pace too. Having a lot of scientific civs speeds up the tech pace generally. There are a lot of factors that go into it, but the difficulty level of play generally dictates the speed of each era.

I have one game that is past y2000 and is just now getting into the Modern Age but I have another in 2009 where I already have a Future Tech (1 scientist after last tech)!
both on Regent
