How many AI rivals do you play against? I play against the maximum allowed per map size (from vanilla Civ3); standard map = 7 rivals. I think Civ3 is not like RTS games where people play 1v1 and 2v2, or some variation of. It seems, to me, that people playing against 1 - 2 AI rivals on a standard map are really just hurting themselves.

Usually seven.

I tryed 1 on 1 once with Japan against China. Not a goog choise, I was a noob. I lost, and since then I play with them all.

Usually against 7 other random civs.
It doesn't slow my computer down to much and it gives a good overview on the diplomatic screen.

Changed the max to 31 in the editor. Even on a huge map, each civ only has about 5 cities.

It depends. If I'm playing on a pangaea, I usually go against 4 or 5 opponents. If I'm playing with continents, then I go with the max.

Depends on the map size. But usually 8.

Really bored, eh? ;)

Just so you know, seven is the default for a standard map, if that's what you meant, not eight. :)

Usually max, or a few less than maximum. However, I'll put a lower # if I'm in the mood for a "superpower game", also with less Civs, tech advances much slower so the game can be longer.

Generally any map standard or lower I'll always play max. Anything larger I may have a few less than max.

So I voted "Depends on the map size and difficulty" Difficulty is hardly a factor for me, I play mostly on Emperor or higher.

I alaways play max. I once tried playing on a huge map with only one rival, that was the first game I actually won. I achieved a culture victory before me and England, my rival, had even been connected to each other with roads. It was fun at first because I could do what I wanted without worrying about running into another nations borders or something like that, but it eventually got boring and I realized that I had to have more rivals for the game to be fun.

I play with maximum civs on a small or standard map, unless it's with 80% water, then I sometimes leave out a few so as to ease congestion.

Always the max possible, all random. Sometimes i've modded the game to have extra civs for the map size i use, like 16 civs on the standard map.
More opponents -> more fun! :D
