Hi, I am new to Civ 1 but already addicted.
How many Cities do you usually build?
Cause I have max 4 up to middle ages and I am wondering if this is too few?
Thanks.

Much too few!

Build as much as possible as long as you're able to defend. That's the trick. ;)

It is very important to build cities as soon as possible, because the earlier they are built, the more productive they will be in the future.

Thanks.
(thank goodness this forum is still active!)

Actually, your best bet is a suicidal level of expansion. Your core cities are meant to build improvements and settlers, but no troops. Let your outer cities build garrisons and settlers as they grow, but no improvements unless your expansion outwards starts to slow.

You quit building cities when your advisor says
"Sire our administrators cannot handle so many cities ..."
or something to that effect.

Of course it depends by terrains too.. When i have bad terrains, i usually build 20 cities to Ad 1.. It's easy, U must build only cities, no irrigations.. When U have 20 cities or more U may build roads, irrigations, at all U may extend your infra-structure and crash an AI :)

In the meantime, of course, occurs the unhappines problem, so build the phalanx in bigger cities..

When you build a lot of cities, are they close together or far away? Can you get a screenshot or something and show me what good civ expansion looks like?

The games allows 128 cities worldwide - yours plus all others.
You get the "cannot handle more" message when you try to exceed that.
In a "large landmass" world, I have the limit and only about the last 10 cities or so are packed so tight they can't support 10 people each (smallest supports 7).
