I have taken capitals three times and split an empire, but after that, the intelligence report reads NONE for the capital. This makes it extremely hard if they start a new spaceship and there is no point in which to stop them. The only way then is to conquer them and that takes alot longer than it takes for them to build a spaceship.

Taking a capital or conquering the entire country is really the last act of desperation when trying to stop another civ landing first. I would only suggest doing it if you are a very long way behind on science. Far better is to build a faster spaceship yourself since the AI normally launches as soon as it can rather than trying to land as soon as it can.

Not so. You do not need to totally destroy them to stop them from building a spaceship. Theoretically, all you need to do is wipe out their major industrial centers, and the spaceship production will slow to a crawl. In practice, it is in fact much easier than this, because once they realize you are well on your way to obliterating them, they will give up building the spaceship in order to defend themselves.

Erm, what if they've already launched it? Yesterday I was playing a King game (I'm good but not that much). I was deep in the space race with the Babylonians and they beat me to launching the ship with two-three turns (their ship was a bit faster too) I soon scraped what armour I could and headed towards Babylon with seven units on a transport. I got there safely and exactly two turns after their ship had arrived I took the city (I had to deal with heavy defences on the way as it wasn't coastal...) Damn, did that make me mad. TWO TURNS! Sheesh.

P.S. I'm new to the forums
