Never. I can just build a city on the spot and then the AI can't take it over by placing a city next to it.

Sometimes I buid a colony to get a resource or luxury that is just in between two recently conquered cities. But that only happens once in a blue moon.

I use them sometimes, but not frequently. If there is an urgent resource that I need now and can't wait for a new city or culture expansion, then I will use one. Or, if an enemy city was built on something useful, I'll use a slave from the razed city to build a colony and claim the resource. But that's only if I need it. Really, for me, it depends on the situation.

I built one in my first ever civ3 game. The AI took it away from me when he plopped a settler down right next to my colony. Haven't touched them, since.

I'll only use them if I need a resource NOW and a Worker can get there faster than a Settler. Or for an XCC.

Oh great, right when I think I'm doing something right.

*Bangs head*

I only use them if there's a resource in the middle of a mountain range that I just can't get to with a city.

never-ever...
If I see a resource that I need, I just build a city next to it or conquer the nation who holds it...
that simple :P

Only if they are in the middle of the mountains or if it's a small hole in my territory and the resource is placed right there.

I only use them once in a blue moon to get resorces in the meantime while waiting for a settler to get to it. I never use colonys as a major way to get resorces. I always build a settler and found a city beside it so it can't be swallowed up by my neighbor building thier city there. I voted rarely.

Only if I play 5cc or occ, otherwise city is much better.

If I space out my city layout to where theres gaps - and my boundries wont expand and cover that gap and theres say / iron . I'll colonize but thats It.

In some of the mods, like Rhye's or TAM, they are very useful since it is much harder to build settlers. I rarely use them in the epic game since building a settler is easier.

Even in the epic game, I sometimes use them for speed. For example, I conquer a town, and there is iron right outside the order. I want to build swordsmen, so I build a colony on the iron.

I use colonies often in the Conquest scenarios. Rarely in epic games. And I guess that's what you're asking, so rarely.

I will sometimes build a colony right before founding a city; (eg on a gems mountain) so I'll get the resource connected immediately without building a road. And sometimes when "milking" a game I will colonise all the resources in the world, just for the heck of it. It still doesn't please the Trade advisor though. :crazyeye:
